Steve Rogers chose Falcon as the new Captain America. He time traveled back to the exact moment in time when he left so that he could pass on the shield to Sam. But many have raise questions regarding this choice. Often times, the question posed is simply- why didn’t choose his best friend Bucky as the next Captain America? The answer to this was given by Steve himself:

Sam Wilson Is A Good Man And So He Became Captain America

Watch the scene in Avengers: Endgame when Captain America is preparing to enter the quantum realm and return the stones to their set places in time. Before heading in he exchanges pleasantries with Sam and Bucky. It is there that Sam offers to go with Steve on his journey. In response to this, Steve says:

You’re a good man Sam. This one’s on me though”

While it might seem like an ordinary conversation at first but being a good man is exactly why Steve chose him to be Captain america. Fans will remember that this dialogue is also a callback to what Abraham Erskine (Stanley Tucci) said to Steve in the first Captain america movie, Captain America: The First Avenger, before he underwent the Supersoldier experiment. Erskine said:

Whatever happens tomorrow, you must promise me one thing. That you will stay who you are, not a perfect soldier, but a good man.”

At The Core Captain America Is A Good Man

Captain America has a lot of enhanced abilities but the core of the character resides in morality.  Steve Rogers was a good man way before he was injected with the Super Serum. After all, he was jumping on grenades back when he was still a scrawny wannabe soldier. In a similar way Sam was always willing in to jump in and help even though he didn’t have any super powers.

This doesn’t mean that Bucky isn’t a good man. But he could still have Hydra codes swirling around in his subconscious. Or it’s very possible that both Bucky and Steve talked about who should be Captain America next and both chose Sam. After all, when Steve handed over the shield to Sam, then he has a look like he knew the decision all along and supported it.

Overall, we can’t wait to see Sam take on the mantle of Captain america in Falcon and the Winter Soldier which will air on Disney+.
