Succession Spinoff Rumors Addressed by HBO CEO: “I have an idea”
Despite its record-breaking Emmy wins, don’t expect to see the Roy family back on HBO anytime soon in a Succession spinoff series. In a new interview, HBO CEO Casey Bloys said that a spinoff from the hit drama is “highly unlikely.” Succession shattered HBO records at the 2024 Emmys, scoring six wins including Outstanding Drama Series. The show’s acclaim has led many fans to wonder if HBO might revisit that world with a new spinoff or prequel. But Bloys threw cold water on that speculation, saying Jesse Armstrong has been “pretty clear” that he doesn’t intend to continue the story.
What’s Next for Succession‘s Creator?
Though a Succession spinoff seems improbable, Bloys is eager to work again with Armstrong, who recently signed an overall deal with HBO. “I look forward to what he’s going to do next,” Bloys said.
“If Jesse changed his mind and came to us and said, ‘I have the best idea, this is what I want to do,’ then we would have that conversation,” Bloys told TheWrap, referring to Succession creator Jesse Armstrong.
But Bloys believes Armstrong wants to move on creatively from the saga of the wealthy and backstabbing Roy family.
Bloys noted that Armstrong wanted to take a break after Succession’s intense six-season run. “I think one of the worst things you can do is rush right into something new,” he said. “I think he should take his time and see what he gets excited about.”
While Succession fans may be disappointed by the spinoff update, Bloys’ comments indicate HBO will likely remain in business with creator Armstrong for years to come.
Could Armstrong Have a Change of Heart?
Though characterizing a Succession spinoff as “highly unlikely,” Bloys did leave open the possibility that Armstrong could eventually revive the concept.
“If Jesse changed his mind and came to us and said, ‘I have the best idea, this is what I want to do,’ then we would have that conversation,” Bloys allowed.
For now, Bloys seems content to let Armstrong relax and map out his next steps following Succession’s intensely demanding six-season run. But perhaps after recharging, Armstrong may find he has an irresistible idea to revisit the Emmy-winning world of the Roy family business.

What Other HBO Shows Are in the Pipeline?
While Succession fans may have to settle for reruns for now, HBO has numerous other high-profile shows in the works to fill the prestige drama void.
Bloys cited new seasons of existing hits like True Detective, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Hacks, and Euphoria as projects likely to compete at the 2024 Emmys. He also name-checked upcoming series such as The Regime starring Kate Winslet, The Sympathizer from Robert Downey Jr., and The Penguin centering on Colin Farrell’s Batman character.
HBO also has two Game of Thrones spinoffs in active development, Bloys confirmed. This includes the Targaryen-focused House of the Dragon, which dropped its first teaser trailer in October, and a possible show based on George R.R. Martin’s “Dunk and Egg” novellas.

While HBO’s slate remains robust, Bloys admitted that the lingering SAG-AFTRA strike has compressed the timeline for some shows to be Emmy-eligible next year. But with or without Succession, expect HBO to field another formidable lineup of contenders at the 2024 Emmys as they look to build on this year’s dominant showing.
