The actors’ chemistry on and off-screen gave rise to many dating rumors at the time, which intrigued the audience enough to watch the movie. However, in an interview with the New York Times, Glen Powell cleared the air about their dating rumors and said,
The two things that you have to sell a rom-com are fun and chemistry. Sydney and I have a ton of fun together, and we have a ton of effortless chemistry. That’s people wanting what’s on the screen off the screen, and sometimes you just have to lean into it a bit—and it worked wonderfully. Sydney is very smart.
Despite their sizzling chemistry and sharing a great rapo, the movie received mixed reviews, but what caught the attention was how effortless their chemistry was. Although a section of movie-goers were not impressed with their chemistry and stated that the hype about them was just to drive people to theatres. The two of them later admitted to looking for their next project. Other than Sydney Sweeney and Glen Powell’s chemistry, what caught the attention of the audience was the soundtrack of the movie, and Natasha Bedingfield’s 2004-released song Unwritten was one of the songs featured in the movie.
Unwritten plays a significant role in the narrative of Ben’s character and was sung by various characters throughout the movie, making it a defining musical characteristic in Anyone But You. Thanks to the popularity of the movie, Unwritten by Natasha Bedingfield has reportedly reached 1 billion streams on Spotify. At the time of the release of the movie, the music artist wrote,
A rom-com has got girls falling out of cinemas singing my song—and now it’s trending!!!
In her interview with GQ, the artist shared that she gets a video of people singing her song every morning, describing it as one of those songs that feels good to sing. The song had a nearly 250% surge in daily views on its music video. She explained that she gets a lot of requests for her songs to be used in movies, but she loves it when they’re rom-com because she is a rom-com fan.
Natasha Bedingfield talks about the idea behind ‘Unwritten’
During her conversation with People Magazine in February 2024, she was asked about the idea or inspiration behind her now-emerging song, Unwritten. To this, she shared:
I was trying to write a birthday present for my younger brother, who was 14, which is why I think the song resonates with teenagers because it’s really what you need to hear at that age. It’s what I wish I heard at that age—that you don’t really have to have it all figured out.
Upon asking about the song reaching new heights by featuring Ben’s serenity song in Anyone But You, Bedingfield added that, according to her, the song almost feels like a character in the movie. She further said,
My publisher and Will Gluck, the director, were like, ‘Look, it’s a big moment in the movie’. So, I believed them. But when I watched the movie, I was like, ‘Wow’. It’s kind of incredible the way that [Unwritten] is lifting everyone.
The singer further mentioned that she uses music to get to the light that is at the end of the tunnel, and music connects her to everything. Natasha Bedingfield noted during the interview that her music is very optimistic because it’s chasing the light.
