Sydney Sweeney is the latest victim of Hollywood’s persistent ‘Peeping Tom’ phenomenon, a troubling invasion of privacy that continues to plague celebrities. Whether in the backyard of their own homes or on a movie set in L.A., stars are not safe anywhere—and when these pictures surface online, it opens an entirely new chapter of violation.

For those uninitiated, pictures of Sweeney wearing a bikini at her home made their way to the internet this past weekend and started the age-old discourse about how a woman should look. Things got quickly out of hand and ultimately reached the actress who did not waste any time in slamming the petty criticism of her body based on pictures clicked without her consent.

Florence Pugh recently addressed how Hollywood is a tough place for women because they are expected to appear a certain way. From Ariana Grande, whose slender physique earlier this year sparked widespread discussion, to Kate Winslet, whose portrayal in Titanic ignited debates about her weight all those years ago, no woman in Hollywood is safe from scrutiny—no matter their fame, status, or the passage of time.

Women have always faced criticism no what they do and how they look. It is like what Gloria said in Barbie:

You have to be thin, but not too thin. And you can never say you want to be thin. You have to say you want to be healthy, but also you have to be thin.

Sydney Sweeney remains no exception to this. She has constantly been in the spotlight for the past five years starting with her role as Cassie in the hit HBO series Euphoria. Since then, she has appeared in the black comedy show The White Lotus, the commercially successful rom-com Anyone but You, the critically panned superhero film Madame Web, and the horror movie Immaculate.

Last weekend, the Daily Mail posted some pictures of Sweeney in a bikini at her home in Florida. The headline implied that she was “showing off” her body when in reality she seemed to be not even looking at the camera. This only meant one thing: someone clicked her pictures without her consent. Numerous outlets ran with the narrative that she was “showing off”. The comments elicited by these pictures were vile, to say the least.

Not only is taking these pictures a violation of the actress’s privacy, but the nasty comments also reveal how entitled people feel to body-shame women publicly. If this had been a man, he would likely have been praised for having a ‘dad-bod,’ highlighting the double standards ingrained in society. Moreover, the misleading headlines from reputed outlets have only fueled such behavior.

Sydney Sweeney took to Instagram to call out the comments of those manbabies in a video she has posted. She compiled some poisonous comments that called her ‘painfully average’, ‘quite frumpy’, ‘chunky’, and ‘dumpy’ and even went on to question if she was pregnant.

Then, the video switched to a clip of her intense training regime which she has been practicing for her upcoming untitled biopic on boxer Christy Martin. From lifting tires and weights in the gym to throwing punches at a punching bag, she can be seen doing various things to do justice to the Hall of Famer.

Sweeney’s celebrity friends like Glen Powell, Lili Reinhart, Kesha, Vicky Pattison, and Madelyn Cline were quick to comment on her Instagram post by expressing their support for her and praising her training regime. It is really saddening that even a woman as strong and independent as the Reality star has to defend herself against people who do not know her but feel entitled to comment on her body.
