Taylor Swift’s The Manuscript Might Be a Pot Shot at Her Most Contentious Breakup and That’s Not Joe Alwyn or Matty Healy
Taylor Swift is one of the most popular musicians, if not the most popular. From country pop albums like Fearless to the synth-pop album 1989, she has proved her proficiency as a musician time and again. She began writing songs as a professional artist at 14 and has not looked back ever since.
In addition to the eleven albums, she has also released the re-recordings of four albums subtitled Taylor’s Version. Ardent fans of Swift, who like to call themselves Swifties, are quite well-versed in decoding the Easter eggs and hints she gives. This also includes the lyrics of the songs she sings.
Reading between the lines and figuring out what or who the song might be about is also something that these eagle-eyed fans are good at doing. The song The Manuscript on her newest album, The Tortured Poets Department, is seemingly about one of her exes, and not one that you could easily guess.
Taylor Swift’s The Manuscript May Be About This Ex of Hers
Taylor Swift is considered one of the best songwriters of her generation. Not only is she one of the world’s best-selling artists, but also the only billionaire in the world whose sole source of income is music-making. The 14 Grammy Awards she has won over the years prove her brilliance in the field.
It is no secret that Swift often writes songs about her personal experiences. These experiences also include her relationships, both present and past. From Joe Jonas to Jake Gyllenhaal, she has not spared any of her exes, and John Mayer seems to be the one on her radar this time around. Mayer allegedly dated the Cruel Summer singer in late 2009 when she was 19 and he was a little above 30.
Her eleventh studio album, The Tortured Poets Department, was released as a double album on April 19. The 31st track on the album subtitled The Anthology is The Manuscript, and a fan on X has speculated that the lyrics are a hit at the Slow Dancing in a Burning Room singer. The lyrics read:
“In the age of him, she wished she was thirty / And made coffee every morning in a Frеnch press / Afterwards she only atе kids’ cereal / And couldn’t sleep unless it was in her mother’s bed.”
Swift avoids explicitly revealing the subject of her songs so there is no confirmation regarding the fact that this song is actually about Mayer.
Fans Believe The Manuscript Is About John Mayer
Swifties are one of the most passionate fandoms on the internet. So, it does not come as too much of a surprise that they have analyzed the lyrics of every single song that the Lover singer has released. The verdict for The Manuscript is that it is about John Mayer.

This would not be the first time Swift has taken a hit on the Paper Doll singer as the songs Dear John on her album Speak Now and Would’ve, Could’ve, Should’ve on Midnights are allegedly (via Distractify) also about him. It is safe to say that the two songwriters are never ever getting back together.
The Tortured Poets Department is available on Spotify and Apple Music.
