“That chip on her shoulder is real”: Marvel Star Who Played One of Captain America’s Closest Allies-Turned-Villain on the Unexpected Twist No One Saw Coming
There are some characters who successfully imprint themselves on the viewers’ minds despite having less screen time. No matter how small a role they portray, given Marvel’s knack for cameos and teasing characters more often than not, they are able to shine through and become a memorable part of the project.
Take Sharon Carter for instance, we see her help Captain America in his Civil War chapter and tease a romantic relationship with the superhero only to vanish soon after. This left fans wondering what truly happened to the strong and willful agent of S.H.I.E.L.D.
Sharon Carter in Marvel’s The Falcon and the Winter Soldier
Baffled fan queries are finally put to rest when in 2021, we are reintroduced to Sharon Carter in the series The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. However, her zeal for serving the country is replaced by something darker, giving her character an edge that seemed to be missing when she appeared in Captain America: Civil War. Portrayed by actress Emily VanCamp, Sharon’s new avatar in the Disney+ series is admired by fans across the world.

The whys and hows of her trajectory are not discovered in detail, but we get a fair idea of how a government agent protecting the country gets involved in selling underground art pieces. Not just that, she quickly rises in the ranks and becomes the top art thief known for her authenticity and way of doing business. People know not to mess with her and her appearance in the show lives up to the reputation.
The actress further noted that Marvel Studios is doing a great job of showcasing powerful women who become broken by their experiences. Female characters as seen in WandaVision and Ms. Marvel are becoming more impactful with each episode, adding more depth to the show.
Emily VanCamp Talks about Being Back in the Marvel Cinematic Universe
While VanCamp thought her character was gone for good, one call by Marvel was enough to get her excited for the renewed role she played in the show that continued the legacy of Captain America as the Falcon picked up the mantle, or let’s say the iconic vibranium shield. Talking to Refinery29 about her comeback to the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the shocking twist in her character, the actress said,
“I think it was really important that we don’t just have the same Sharon come back into the universe without addressing all of the things that she must’ve gone through. She’s been through the ringer, and she is obviously thriving in this new environment, but is it where she wants to be? Absolutely not. And you kind of wonder, why wasn’t she pardoned? That chip on her shoulder is real, and it kind of comes out in every different facet of the character and how she communicates; how she walks, talks, all of it.”
VanCamp further emphasized how she had to learn martial arts, especially jiu-jitsu, for her signature scene in the trailer where she single-handedly fights goons on the street. The episode where she appears is also aptly titled Power Broker, showing her newfound dominance in the underworld. Fans appreciated Marvel for showing a realistic turn of events that led to Sharon Carter ending up where she did.
