“That was my one condition”: Stranger Things Star Winona Ryder Wanted Showrunners to Grant Her One Wish Before Joining the Show But They Never Had to Fulfil It
- Winona Ryder is set to reprise her role as Lydia Deetz in the 'Beetlejuice' sequel.
- This time, she portrays a widow with a strained relationship with her daughter, Astrid.
- To play this role, the actress had one request for the 'Stranger Things' showrunners.
The wait for Beetlejuice 2 is almost over. The sequel, named Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, will be in theaters this September following its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival. The sequel’s story takes place 30 years after the first film and follows the Deetz family as they return home to Winter River after Charles Deetz’s death.
The good news is that Michael Keaton and Winona Ryder are reprising their respective roles. Interestingly, Ryder, who plays Lydia Deetz, had one request from the Duffer Brothers (related to her roles in both Stranger Things and Beetlejuice 2).
Winona Ryder’s One Condition for Joining Stranger Things
In a recent chat, Winona Ryder shared an interesting demand she made to the Duffer Brothers, the creators of Stranger Things, before agreeing to join the show. She asked for a break in the middle, if Beetlejuice 2 ever got made. In an interview with Harper’s Bazaar, the actress explained:
At the time, Tim [Burton] and I were talking about the ‘Beetlejuice’ sequel. There have been moments over the last 15 years where we thought it was going to happen, but that’s the thing … it had to be perfect with everybody in order for it to happen. I remember at my first meeting with the Duffer Bros. I said, ‘As long as if ‘Beetlejuice 2’ happens you’ll let me go do that.’ They agreed. Luckily it worked out. That was my one condition.
Luckily, the 52-year-old didn’t have to take a break from Stranger Things to film Beetlejuice 2. The movie was shot between seasons of Stranger Things, so Ryder was able to stay on track with her commitments to the Netflix show, which is currently filming its fifth and final season.
Winona Ryder Balanced Stranger Things with Beetlejuice 2 Hopes
While waiting for Beetlejuice 2 to become a reality, Winona Ryder dedicated herself completely to playing Joyce Byers. Stranger Things was her first experience with streaming, a brand-new concept for her at the time. She initially agreed to just do the pilot episode, unsure about the show’s future. Fortunately, Stranger Things became a massive hit, and Ryder ended up playing the determined Joyce for a decade.
In Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, the Hollywood star returns as Lydia Deetz, but now she’s a widow who relies on pills and has trouble connecting with her daughter, Astrid (Jenna Ortega). Lydia hosts a TV show called ‘Ghost House’ because she can see and talk to ghosts. However, there’s a strain between her and Astrid because the one ghost Lydia can’t reach is her late husband and Astrid’s father.
Beetlejuice Beetlejuice is set to hit theaters on September 6th!
