SUMMARY
  • Star Wars: Skeleton Crew is gearing up to narrate a story from the fringes of the galaxy about pirates and mysterious discoveries.
  • Dave Filoni extended layer of boundaries when Jon Watts and Christopher Ford were in the process of making Star Wars: Skeleton Crew.
  • The biggest reinforcement for fans’ trust should come in these two creators’ love for authentic George Lucas, something which they recently admitted to.

Narrating the stories of a galaxy far, far away, George Lucas gave the Star Wars franchise and, eventually Lucasfilm, the legs it stands upon. However, following the Disney takeover, things have not gone to plan, especially in the past few years. While projects like Andor and The Mandalorian have gone on to usher in a new era of fan love, their sister outings, most notably, The Acolyte, fell to poor reception. Amid such a prevailing scenario, will land Star Wars: Skeleton Crew.

Setting aside omens, the live-action with a fast-approaching premiere date carries teeth. Helming the Jude Law starrer are Jon Watts and Christopher Ford, with their experience coming from the MCU’s Spider-Man trilogy. Yet, the biggest reinforcement for fans’ trust should come in these two creators’ love for authentic Lucas, something which they recently admitted to, having shaped the forthcoming project heavily.

In terms of storyline, the upcoming show will undoubtedly vary from its predecessors, with a coming-of-age narrative filled with pirates. Starring Jude Law as a force-sensitive charmer named Jod Na Nawood, the plot will also add four children and their journey through the galaxy in the mix. However, it will not stray into unfamiliarity. In talks with Entertainment Weekly, co-creator Jon Watts opened up about drawing inspiration from the Monkey Island video game series.

The relation between Star Wars faithfulness and Monkey Island comes from the fact that the latter is a series of adventure games developed by LucasArts, aka Lucasfilm Games. While George Lucas did not directly develop the games, his vision for Lucasfilm Games laid the groundwork for the games.

Thus, a connection forms between this truth, and Watt’s statements, where he said,

I’m also a big fan of Monkey Island. That’s also classic Lucas. So somewhere between Star Wars pirates and Monkey Island pirates. I think we found our sweet spot.

The very way that Star Wars: Skeleton Crew is gearing up to narrate a story from the fringes of the galaxy resembles Lucas allowing new ideas to branch off into separate projects like Monkey Island. While the games do not fall under the Star Wars banner, they reflect the creator’s creativity, precisely the same thing that Jon Watts and Christopher Ford are attempting but while staying within the lore.

Dave Filoni would not let the Jude Law starrer break Star Wars canon

Directing Star Wars: The Clone Wars in 2008 brought Dave Filoni to work closely with George Lucas. Subsequently, in 2020, he donned an executive role at Lucasfilm under Disney and went on to become its Chief Creative Officer just three years later. In the same round of talks, Jon Watts heaped praise on Filoni and likened him to a “goalkeeper” who would not let in-development projects break the canon or stray beyond the set lore.

Famed for his active role in shaping the new canon, Filoni also extended the same layer of boundaries when they were in the process of making Star Wars: Skeleton Crew.

What’s great about working at Lucasfilm is that they’ll let you know if you’ve gone outside of the boundaries. Dave Filoni is our goalkeeper.

Elaborating on it further, he added,

We will come up with ideas of things that we like, and then he’ll be like, ‘Actually, maybe it’s this.’ Or, ‘Oh, we already did something like that somewhere else.’ And you always end up with a bunch of other episodes of Star Wars to go watch and things to go read, and it’s good. You feel like you can safely explore things creatively without making some huge canonical mistake.

The assurance of Watts being a long-time admirer of George Lucas and his works, and Dave Filoni acting as a tough barrier for maintaining standards, fans can breathe easy about the forthcoming live-action storyline not going beyond “boundaries.” Thus, delivering a breath of fresh air to the Star Wars saga in the face of mounting pressure.

Star Wars: Skeleton Crew will premiere on December 3, 2024 on Disney+.
