“That’s what I would do”: Matthew Vaughn Has a Controversial Idea to Revive Star Wars That Might Divide the Fandom Forever
Star Wars is a George Lucas-created American space opera media property that debuted in 1977 and quickly rose to fame in popular culture. One of the most successful media franchises, Star Wars, has been adapted into films, television shows, video games, novels, comic books, theme parks, and themed areas, creating a vast fictional universe. Matthew Vaughn wants to revive the franchise.
According to director Matthew Vaughn, who is well-known for films like X-Men: First Class, Kingsman: The Secret Service, Stardust, and Kingsman: The Golden Circle; he would love to venture into the Star Wars franchise. Let’s find out what suggestions Vaughn has for reviving the franchise.
Matthew Vaughn on his idea to rearrange the Star Wars franchise
In his appearance on Josh Horowitz’s Happy Sad Confused podcast, director Matthew Vaughn expressed that he would like to take a crack at rearranging Star Wars with more familiar characters along with all-new versions of Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader. He said,
“I would say, for me, doing a Star Wars movie is to play with the characters I loved. So if they said to me, ‘Do you want to reboot Star Wars and actually have Luke Skywalker, Solo, and Vader, and you do your version of it,’ everyone would say, ‘You’re an idiot to try,’ but that would excite me.”
During the conversation, the director acknowledged that moving away from the characters is one way the franchise has taken a misstep by adding that Star Wars is the Skywalker family and that’s where he thinks the makers have gone wrong, noting;
“They’ve done brilliantly in the TV [shows on Disney+], but it needs an epic new film, and that’s what I would do. Everyone’s going to go batsh*t crazy, but let’s bring it on, because if you want a new generation, make a movie for them. The old generation can hopefully do it well enough that they go, ‘Okay, I’m enjoying it.’”
During his interview with ScreenRant during New York Comic Con, he said, “If they wanted to reboot Star Wars, set the story with the Skywalkers. And then I’ll go, Hey, that will be interesting. Because for me, it’s got to be something so bold, so different, and so brave.”
He said that he doesn’t control Star Wars but he would do something big, brave, and with great characters.
Will Matthew Vaughn be given the green signal to make Star Wars movies?
According to THR, Katheleen Kennedy had already mentioned in Vanity Fair last year that Lucasfilm is currently focused on expanding George Lucas’ universe, which is going to be beyond the Skywalker saga.
“We also can’t go do something with Luke Skywalker that isn’t Mark Hamill. We’re not going to suddenly go try to do that.”
During the podcast interview, the director noted that along with comic book writer Mark Millar, he had a concept for a three-movie trilogy for Superman for Warner Bros., pointing out that they were not interested and that is as far they went. He also noted that the proposed trilogy would have borrowed from Richard Donner’s Superman movies.
He said via Deadline, “I think Donner nailed it. I think Wonder Woman worked very well because it was basically a Donner Superman film, but reimagined as Wonder Woman. I would’ve done a modern version of the Donner [films].”
“Our big idea was the twist that Krypton doesn’t blow up. It does eventually. The dad was right, he just got his timing wrong. So when Superman’s grown up, suddenly there’s a mass exodus and then all hell breaks loose, and that was our idea,” said the director when asked about his plans for the Superman trilogy.
Matthew Vaughn teases Kick-Ass reboot and Kingsman 3
During his interview with ComicBook, the director said,
“We will be doing a reboot of Kick-Ass next year, but it’s a total… it’s like… it’s as brave as the first one but totally different and more reflective of the times we’re in. Kick-Ass sort of changed people’s perception of what a superhero film was at that time.”
He continued, “None of the characters from the other Kick-Ass. We’d like to bring them back after the reboot, but this reboot, is just going off on a tangent that I can’t. I really can’t talk about that.”
Talking about Kingsman 3, he said, “We’ve got to get on with Kingsman 3 because I was joking that Colin [Firth] is going to end up being a portrait on the side while Taron is Arthur. So we are working on that at the moment.”
Matthew Vaughn’s Argylle is set to premiere in theatres on Feb 2, 2024.
