Mary Mara, who is best known for her role as Inspector Bryn Carson on Nash Bridges and appearances on primetime dramas ER and Law & Order, died in Cape Vincent, New York on Sunday from an apparent drowning. The actress was discovered in the St. Lawrence River in Cape Vincent around 8:10 p.m. on Sunday by the New York State Police.

Sources tell Mary Mara was staying at the summer home of her sister Martha. A preliminary investigation has concluded that Mary Mara died by drowning while swimming. Her body has been sent to the Jefferson County Medical Examiner’s office for a proper autopsy which will determine an official cause of death.

Mary Mara’s manager Craig Dorfman confirmed her death, “Mary was one of the finest actresses I ever met. I still remember seeing her onstage in 1992 in ‘Mad Forest’ off Broadway. She was electric, funny, and a true individual. Everyone loved her. She will be missed.

Mary Mara was born and raised in Syracuse, N.Y., and began her film and TV career in 1989 with the television movie The Preppie Murder, and went on to appear in more than 80 screen credits. She appeared in ER, which saw her play recurring patient Loretta Sweet and in Nash Bridges, she played inspector Bryn Carson. Other notable television credits include NYPD Blue, Ally McBeal, Farscape, Law & Order, The West Wing, Monk, Shameless, Ray Donovan, Dexter, and Criminal Minds.

She made her film debut in 1992 with Love Potion No. 9 and also appeared in other famous movies like Mr. Saturday Night, The Hard Way, Bound, A Civil Action, K-Pax, Gridiron Gang, and Prom Night. Mary Mara retired from acting in 2020 and returned to live in Syracuse.
