The Boys Season 3 Promo Teases Its Own Avengers-Like Team
Another member of The Boys’ new superhero squad has been revealed.
Fans got their first glance at actor Sean Patrick Flanery as the series’ next supe, Gunpowder, on the November 2021 episode of Seven on 7 with Cameron Coleman. Flanery was revealed in June that he will be joining the series for Season 3 alongside Miles Gaston Villanueva as Starlight’s ex-boyfriend Supersonic and Nick Wechsler as Blue Hawk. Gunpowder is shown in the news segment to be not only an original invention for the Prime Video series but also a member of its other major super team: Payback.
Payback is a comic book series that takes a different approach to Marvel’s Avengers. The team name will be the title of Season 3’s opening episode, with at least two more supes from the group debuting as well. Jensen Ackles from Supernatural will play Soldier Boy, while Laurie Holden from The Walking Dead will play the Crimson Countess, in hilarious spoofs on Captain America and Scarlet Witch, respectively. Aside from the photographs that have been shared, Ackles has not been seen in costume. However, Holden was shown singing in costume on the most recent Seven on Seven episodes.
Gunpowder, on the other hand, is not a new character in the series. The character initially appeared on television in Season 1’s second episode “Cherry” at 52:39, albeit he was not played by Flanery. In that brief appearance, he was featured in a TV program on a mall shooting, arguing that if “more people were armed,” he wouldn’t have to “save the day every time.” This approach is shown in the November Vought News update, which highlighted Gunpowder launching a new “Junior Shooter Program” to educate youngsters on how to handle weapons.
The most recent news updates Gunpowder’s current status, saying that the supe has been retired since Season 1. As previously stated, Flanery’s character never appeared in the comics, with Payback having other members such as Tek Knight, Swatto, Mind Droid, and Eagle the Archer. Eagle appeared as a former member of the Church of the Collective in the series’ second season, while Stormfront served as the season’s principal opponent. For the time being, Tek Knight has only been mentioned in the series.
With Gunpowder entering the series as a Payback member, it raises the question of who else will be joining the super team or making the transition from the page to the screen. The series’ crew presently has three confirmed members, with the possibility of four if Stormfront’s permanently-wounded status changes in Season 3. It remains to be seen whether new supes such as Supersonic and Blue Hawk will join the squad.
Season 3 of The Boys is expected to premiere in mid-2022. The first two seasons of the show are now available on Prime Video.
