The Cast For Disney’s The Little Mermaid Live-Action Is Finally Announced!
Disney’ The Little Mermaid has been talked about for a while now, what with a live action movie on the works. Earlier this month on Disney’s Investors Day 2020, a series of announcements regarding their future projects were made. Among them, was a little something about The Little Mermaid.
Yes people! We finally have the whole cast for Disney’s live action version of The Little Mermaid, and it looks absolutely spectacular.
The Live Leading Lady Herself!
So first up, we have Ariel herself. The mermaid princess who wants to see what lies beyond the sea will be played by Halle Bailey. You might know Halle from the Grammy nominated musical duo Chloe & Halle. Her, and her older sister Chloe were discovered by none other than Queen Bey herself!
Along with being a Disney princess, Halle is also part of the Freeform sitcom, Grown-ish, along with her sister Chloe. Grown-ish is a spin-off of the ABC sitcom Black-ish.
Hello Darling Prince!
We all liked Prince Eric, right? He is one of the good one, of all the Disney prince’s out there. He understood and loved Ariel even when she couldn’t speak, and that has always been one of his best qualities. And this character will be played by British-American actor Jonah Hauer-King.
Jonah can also be seen in movies such as The Last Photograph and A Dog’s Way Home. And currently he stars in BBC’s World on Fire.
The King of The Sea
King Triton, Ariel’s father, will be played by none other than the extraordinary Javier Bardem. In Greek mythology, Triton is actually the son of the sea god Poseidon and his wife Amphitrite. But in the Disney version – Triton is more or less a version of the Poseidon himself.
Bardem is an Oscar winning actor, who we have seen in movies like No Country for Old Men, Vicky Cristina Barcelona, and currently waiting for the release of his upcoming movie Dune.
The Evil Sea Witch
The evil sea witch Ursula will be played by the absolutely amazing Melissa McCarthy. Melissa, with her winning smile and charming personality has been someone that fans absolutely adore. So for her to play the cruel witch Ursula would be a delight to watch.
The Emmy award winning actor is currently hosting the variety show Little Big Shots. Along with her hosting job, McCarthy is also gearing up for the TV adaptation of Nine Perfect Strangers on Hulu.
The Crab From Jamaica
Sebastian was, is and will always be the best part of The Little Mermaid, right? Glad we all agree on that. The Jamaican accented red lobster (but he is a crab, right?), that follows Ariel around and gives her some really good advice that unfortunately, the young rebel doesn’t really listen to!
Daveed Diggs will be the one to voice our favorite Sebastian. And you have probably (definitely!) seen Diggs as Thomas Jefferson in Hamilton. He was also in the recent Pixar movie Soul.
Mermaid’s Best Baby Fish Friend
Flounder, the most adorable fish that ever lived will be voiced by the equally adorable Jacob Tremblay. Ariel’s best friend in the whole wide world, albeit a little panicky at times, Flounder is absolutely loyal to his princess.
You have probably seen Tremblay in the Brie Larson movie Room, where he played her son. You know, the one for which Larson won her Oscar! He has also starred in movies like Wonder and Doctor Sleep.
Snarfblatt Seagull
Scuttle the seagull, is another one of Ariel’s friend that we will be seeing in the live action movie. And the character will be voiced by none other than Akwafina. The once rapper, who has made quite a name for herself in the acting world will be playing the seagull that deems itself a know it all about the surface world.
Akwafina has done movies like Crazy Rich Asians, Oceans 8 and won the Golden Globe Award for Best Actress for the movie The Farewell.
Now that the casting has been complete, more or less, things are kinda looking up for the upcoming live action movie. And to top it all, the movie is going to have original music from the immensely talented Lin-Manuel Miranda, as well as Alan Menken.
Not to forget, the timeless classics that was the original soundtrack for the animated movie will also be featured in the live action version, along with the originals. So yay for us all around!
