Although it was the death of Robert Baratheon that sparked the War of the Five Kings as various factions claimed the throne, there were several other factors that led to the war. One of these things was Cersei Lannister’s marriage to Robert. Had Cersei married Oberyn Martell, the war could have been avoided altogether.

Game of Thrones Might Not Have Happened If Cersei Lannister Had Married Oberyn Martell

Cersei Lannister’s (Lena Headey) marriage to Robert Baratheon (Mark Addy) was for purely political reasons. It was arranged to solidify an alliance between House Baratheon and House Lannister after Robert’s Rebellion. Hence, the marriage was loveless. Robert’s love for Lyanna Stark did not help the case, leading Cersei to resent him, eventually resulting in her infidelity.

Now, if Cersei had married Oberyn (Pedro Pascal) instead, it would have culminated in an alliance between House Lannister and House Martell. Perhaps this would have also stopped Oberyn from avenging the Lannisters for his sister Elia’s death during the sack of King’s Landing. So, the Lannister-Stark rivalry would not exist.

Robert’s rebellion against the Targaryens was one of the main catalysts of Game of Thrones. It was sparked by his love for Lyanna Stark, and without him as the central figure, it could have been avoided, or things could have gone differently. Further, he would not have had the same personal motivations to usurp the Targaryens if Cersei had married Oberyn.

With Cersei and Oberyn’s shared love for power and pleasure, they would have made for a harmonious couple rather than a toxic one. In fact, the illegitimacy scandal caused by Cersei’s relationship with Jaime could also be avoided. The secret of her children’s parentage played a huge role in the downfall of the Lannisters and Baratheon rule.

Although the Game of Thrones could be avoided this way, there is no guarantee that Oberyn’s marriage with Cersei would have resulted in a happily ever after. Many things could have possibly gone wrong if they were to get married.

To begin with, the stark contrast in their personalities would be a matter of huge concern. Oberyn’s independent and carefree nature likely would have clashed with Cersei’s need for dominance. They also did not crave the same kind of power.

Additionally, much like her relationship with Robert, Cersei and Oberyn’s marriage would also be riddled with the former’s insecurities about infidelity. She was the jealous and possessive kind which would have conflicted Oberyn’s non-monogamous nature.

It is no secret that Oberyn had relationships with both men and women and was in a loving relationship with Ellaria Sand, his paramour. This would not bode well with Cersei. Overall, marriage to any of these men would not warrant Cersei’s happiness.
