“The focus on celebrity-ness, it’s not real”: Andre Braugher Deliberately Chose Not to Make It Big in Hollywood Despite Being a Gifted Actor for a Personal Reason
Andre Braugher’s role as Detective Frank Pembleton in Homicide: Life on the Street brought him a lot of fame. Moreover, he also earned an Emmy for the same. However, his most popular role is that of a no-nonsense police Captain Raymond Holt in Brooklyn Nine-Nine. The character became an instant hit and made him one of the favorite cop characters in the television series history.
Despite being such a gifted actor, Andre Braugher made a conscious decision not to chase the glitz and glamour of Hollywood by making it big in the industry.
Andre Braugher’s family was more important to him than his career
Andre Braugher was married to Ami Brabson in 1991, the couple had three sons together as well and they were more important to him than anything in the world. During an interview with Variety back in 2020, Braugher revealed that even though Brooklyn Nine-Nine shoots in Los Angeles, he flew home every weekend to see his family. He said:
“I made a choice along the way that Ami and those boys were too important to not spend quantity time with. Both the health crisis and the democracy crisis that we’re going through demonstrate to me that there’s no substance in the bling. The focus on celebrity-ness — it’s not real. So I just chose, in my own way, to sort of drop out.”
It’s safe to say that it was a conscious decision made by Andre Braugher who did not seem to be interested in making it big in Hollywood by sacrificing his time with his family.
Andre Braugher spoke about his role in Brooklyn Nine-Nine
During the same interview with Variety, Andre Braugher reflected on his role in Brooklyn Nine-Nine. While claiming that after playing the role for so many years, he also fell prey to the mythology that was built up. He said:
“I look up after all these decades of playing these characters and I say to myself, it’s been so pervasive that I’ve been inside this storytelling, and I too have fallen prey to the mythology that’s been built up.”
Andre Braugher recently passed away at the age of 61. The news was confirmed by his representative Jennifer Allen who revealed that he passed away after suffering a brief illness. No more details about his passing away or the illness provided by his representative.
