The Iron Claw Star is Not Happy He Wasn’t Included in the Movie’s Marketing as Much as Zac Efron
Actor Holt McCallany has expressed disappointment over the marketing campaign for his new film, which he feels has focused too heavily on his co-star Zac Efron rather than giving equal attention to other cast members. McCallany stars in the upcoming biopic about the rise of the Von Erich wrestling family. He plays family patriarch Fritz Von Erich, while Efron portrays Kevin Von Erich.
Did Holt McCallany Have a Beef with Zac Efron?
In a recent interview with Awards Daily, Holt McCallany said he “would have preferred to be included more in the marketing of the film with Zac and with Jeremy.” He went on to acknowledge that the movie “seems poised to be a real commercial hit,” despite his misgivings over the publicity.
When asked directly about Zac Efron, McCallany clarified that they “got along very well” and developed a friendship during filming.
He stated: “Zac is an amiable guy, he’s congenial, and he’s respectful.”
It appears McCallany’s frustration stems not from Efron himself but rather the decision by the studios marketing team to focus so heavily on Efron at the expense of other cast members.

As an established character actor, McCallany has a point about being overshadowed by Efron’s star power. He has turned in acclaimed performances for years in projects like Mindhunter, yet Efron gets top billing in the marketing.
On the other hand, Efron is a proven box office draw thanks to hits like Neighbors. So it makes sense for studios to lean on his popularity, even if it frustrates co-stars.
How Does Holt McCallany Explain His Late Career Surge?
Now, in his late 50s, McCallany is busier than ever after decades of steady acting work. He attributes this “late bloom” to perseverance and self-belief.
As he put it:
“You have to be an optimist. You can’t think about the odds against you.”
McCallany also credits the acting lessons and advice he received when first starting out in the business. This gave him the mindset of valuing hard work over industry connections.
He remains confident that “the best is yet to come” and promises fans they will “hear a lot more” from him in the near future. For now, he continues to choose interesting roles that allow him to showcase his talents.
