The Last of Us Star Claps Back at Haters After Being Criticized for Not Being Game-Accurate
Melanie Lynskey is an actress appreciated for her roles in independent films. She is often referred to as the queen of indie films. She is known for portraying memorable roles and grabbing attention as a lead or even in a supporting role. Lynskey who made her screen debut at the age of 16, has received various accolades, including Critics Choice Awards and nominations for the Emmys. Her stellar performance was seen in the drama series Showtime’s Yellowjackets and as the rebel leader Kathleen in Neil Druckmann’s post-apocalyptic video game adaptation The Last of Us.
Melanie Lynskey faces body-shaming backlash and responds with Compassion
In the latest issue published by The Wrap’s awards magazine, Melanie Lynskey shares her experience during the filming of a popular drama series, The Last of Us. She said it was a perfect experience working with an impressive crew. “This has been a perfect experience. Everyone working for it is at the absolute top of their game. It was pretty amazing.” And less amazing was the online reaction. Since her character was played as a rebel leader that wasn’t in the video game, which was divisive in part due to her physical appearance, some random viewers tweeted body-shaming notes, claiming that she doesn’t resemble a post-apocalyptic rebel leader.
“Some dude wrote me a message, and he was like, ‘Sorry, but getting the facts right is important, and you just don’t look anything like the character in the game.’ I wanted to be like, ‘Sorry, getting the facts right is important. That character wasn’t in the f-king game.'”

Since it hasn’t been the first time Lynskey has the internet going around in circles about her appearance. Unsurprisingly, as she always does, she shuts down the criticism with compassion and patience.
“I just try to have compassion,” she said. “Sometimes I go to their pages and I look at them and I’m like, ‘You know what? This person is struggling. Life is really hard. Here he is with his kids. OK, this is humanizing this person who feels the need to tell me every day that he doesn’t like me.'”
Previously, popular model Adrianne Curry threw a curveball by suggesting that her body type did not fit her character. “Her body says the life of luxury, not a post-apocalyptic warlord.” Curry also referenced the character of Sarah Connor in the Terminator franchise, adding, “Where is Linda Hamilton when you need her?” Lynskey responded,
“And I’m playing a person who meticulously planned and executed an overthrow of FEDRA. I am supposed to be smart, ma’am. I don’t need to be muscular. That’s what henchmen are for.”
Lynskey expresses that some people are upset about her casting, but she finds it exciting. She explained that, despite her role as a rebel leader, she intentionally wants her character to be feminine and soft-spoken, qualities that are seen as going against the norm.
