Everything About Disney’s New Movie, The Little Mermaid

Disney’s tale of The Little Mermaid is an epic creation, originally written by Hans Christian Andersen in 1837, and the movie has captivated audiences for generations. In 1989, Disney first transformed this unique love story into an animated masterpiece. Now decades later, Disney has again decided to enchant the audiences by bringing the movie to life again in the form of a live-action adaptation film by the same name in 2023. Even before its release the film had sparked various debates and was surrounded by multiple controversies.

The new Disney movie has American actress Halle Bailey in the lead role as Ariel, the youngest daughter of King Triton. Though Bailey’s casting attracted a lot of racist controversies as the original princess was described as having a fair skin tone and Bailey is dark-toned. But due to her singing and acting talent, Bailey was a perfect fit for the role. The other central characters of the film are Javier Bardem as King Triton, Mellisa McCarthy as Ursula, the iconic sea witch, Jonah Hauer-King portrays Prince Eric whom Ariel falls in love with, and Daveed Diggs as Sebastian.

Disney’s The Little Mermaid Surpasses Michael B. Jordan’s Creed III

The remake of the 1988 animated film, The Little Mermaid made $117.5 million at the box office during the four-day holiday due to the Memorial Day weekend. This makes the Disney film the fifth largest Memorial Day debut behind last year’s Top Gun: Maverick which earned $160.5 million over the weekend.

The $250 million film, needs to make similar earnings in the coming weekends too if it wants to go into profits. Critics described Disney’s new creation as a perfect family film and the audience is mostly from the family category. It is an opportunity for current generation parents to take their kids for a remake of the movie after decades.

In terms of earnings, The Little Mermaid has surpassed the $300 million mark worldwide since its release and has officially dethroned Michael B. Jordan’s Creed 3 to become the 6th Highest Grossing 2023 Movie. For a movie with so many hiccups, it is surely a great achievement and a punch to the trolls and haters who criticized the movie for its bold step of including a black princess Ariel played by Halle Bailey.
