If we talk about negative comments and bad reception of movies, it has been an issue in the Marvel Cinematic Universe lately. The movie has received immense backlash over numerous issues like the prominence of female characters in the movie which was brought up in its previous Captain Marvel too.

The other complaints include the “emasculation” of its male characters triggered unexpected responses from a subset of the audience and being the worst MCU movie for Larson which has earned $21.5 million so far and requires homework for the basic understanding of its plot. While speaking to Variety for an interview, the director of The Marvels Nia DaCosta has come up to respond to the criticism:

“There are pockets where you go because you’re like, ’I’m a super fan. I want to exist in the space of just adoration — which includes civilized critique. Then there are pockets that are really virulent and violent and racist — and sexist and homophobic and all those awful things. And I choose the side of the light. That’s the part of fandom I’m most attracted to.”

DaCosta revealed that she barely focuses on the dark side of the MCU fandom but the bright. The director takes the negative comments positively and acknowledges that these backlashes are helpful for some reasons. She also clarified that choosing  Beastie Boys’ 1998 hit “Intergalactic,” wasn’t a deliberate choice and solely focused on a playful response to certain criticism.

When the director was talking about her vision of making The Marvels, she mentioned that it was to make the film “fun, funny and full of heart.” She even claims that the three superheroes are sisters and states: “These three women are basically like sisters: Carol’s the oldest, Kamala’s the youngest, and Monica is in the middle.” Nia DaCosta wanted to make sure that this movie fulfills the promise made in the Avengers: End game and added:

“What I like about Marvel films is that they have a consistent energy, but they can feel really different depending on what the vibe is or who the filmmaker is.”

The director expressed her passion for the Marvel comics especially the story of Kamala Khan which she enjoyed the most. However, directing The Marvels wasn’t smooth sailing for DaCosta who said “Directing is incredibly lonely”. The director acknowledged the support of the Marvel team she received while working on her movie which turned out to be quite helpful for her.
