The Marvels is as Bad as Eternals and Ant-Man 3: Brie Larson’s Movie Makes an Unwanted MCU Record
The recently released superhero movie The Marvels has been the talk of the town for a while now. The movie comes as a sequel to 2019’s Captain Marvel and also a continuation of the Disney+ series Ms. Marvel. The movie stars numerous famous actors, namely Brie Larson, Iman Vellani, Samuel L. Jackson, Park Seo-joon, and many others.
It is no news that some of the most recent projects of the Marvel Cinematic Universe have not done too well at the box office. This led to speculations about the success of The Marvels. Much to Marvel’s horror, this movie has also not been received too well by the viewers as it sees the worst audience score that the MCU has ever got in its history.
The Marvels Has Got A Bad Audience Score
The Marvels follows Brie Larson‘s Carol Danvers aka Captain Marvel, Iman Vellani’s Kamala Khan aka Ms. Marvel, and Teyonah Parris’ Monica Rambeau fighting Zawe Ashton’s Kree warrior Dar-Benn. However, there is a twist in the story because every time one of the three superheroes uses their powers, they swap places with another hero.
The Captain Marvel sequel made its theatrical debut on November 10, 2023, and it is safe to say that it has not been up to the MCU mark. The review aggregator website CinemaScore has given the movie a ‘B’ score rating. This has landed the movie in the same category as 2021’s Eternals and 2023’s Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania as both of these movies also got a ‘B’ score rating from CinemaScore.
CinemaScore takes ratings from moviegoers as soon as they leave the theater after watching the movie and then averages them to finalize the audience score rating. This implies that the score is based purely on the first reactions of the public after they are done watching the movie.
In the past 15 years of MCU’s movie-making history, there have been only six films that have received a rating below ‘A-‘ from CinemaScore. This year seems to be the year of firsts for MCU as one after the other, the franchise keeps receiving shocks in the form of failures.
The Marvels Might Do Better Later
There are quite a few reasons why The Marvels might have received such an audience rating. Recently, there has been a downward trend in the performance of superhero movies in general whether they are a part of the DC franchise or the MCU franchise. It could have been due to fans losing interest in the genre or a decline in the quality of the movies.
Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania had CGI issues that were quite noticeable and this did not end well with the critics who obviously expect better from MCU. Once again, these CGI problems were the very thing that caused The Marvels to lose its charm. Additionally, Zawe Ashton’s performance as Dar-Benn has also played a key role in disappointing the viewers.
Earlier this year, Disney and Pixar’s Elemental also had a bad opening weekend but things improved as it grossed over $400 million worldwide. So, there is still hope for The Marvels even if it has a long battle to fight.
