“The most carefully designed movie I’ve done”: Tom Hiddleston led $74M Movie is Guillermo del Toro’s Most Intricately Designed ‘Kinky, Gothic Romance’
Tom Hiddleston is set to return to Disney+ with his much-praised Marvel TV series Loki at the end of this month.
Despite being introduced as a villain in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Hiddleston’s brilliant portrayal of the mischievous thief has made him a very popular Marvel figure among the fans, who continue to get amazed by the complexity of the trickster god’s personality, who’s sometimes evil, sometimes good, and at times creepy.
However, anyone who has watched Crimson Peak might not consider Loki to be Hiddleston’s most complex character.
Loki Star Tom Hiddleston Once Led Guillermo del Toro’s Kinky Movie
Gothic romance Crimson Peak, the movie directed by Mexican filmmaker Guillermo del Toro, has plenty to offer: a talented cast, blood, violence, scares, and some kinky sequences.
The plot follows the story of Sir Thomas Sharpe (Tom Hiddleston) who marries Edith (Mia Wasikowska) and takes her to his remote mansion. Edith, who’s able to communicate with the ghosts, tries to unravel the mystery and dark secrets of the mansion that is also supposedly protected by Thomas’s fascinating sister Lady Lucille (Jessica Chastain).
Before the release of the movie in 2015, del Toro was very pleased with how he shaped the horror flick, saying: “I think Crimson is the most carefully designed movie I’ve done. But it’s very different. It has fairy tale overtones in some instances, but is a gothic romance.”
When asked to explain what it was like shooting a very s*xual film, the director, who’s famous for his dark-themed movies, said: “It was strange. My daughter asked me questions about how are you gonna shoot that. I go, ‘I don’t know!’ She was like, ‘Dad, DAD, how are you going to shoot that?’ I go, ‘Ehh.'”
Disappointingly, del Toro’s “kinky” movie failed to attract viewers in theaters, managing to collect just $74.7 million at the box office.
Still, with the cast’s subtle but brilliant work as well as the way their character’s questionable relationship dynamics were presented, Crimson Peak is often considered a very underrated movie in both del Toro and Hiddleston’s resume.
Loki’s Tom Hiddleston Played a Very Complex Character in Crimson Peak
Hiddleston’s character in Crimson Peak was a creative but introverted individual, who kept his circle limited to his gothic mansion. Whatever he did revolved around either his own needs, his sister’s, or Edith’s.
If you think Loki falling in love with Sylvie, a female Loki variant, in the Marvel series is interesting, you’ll be left puzzled by the seemingly taboo dynamics between Sir Thomas and his sister Lady Lucille.
However, his intriguing closeness with his sister was also potentially the result of his isolated upbringing, bereft of any guidance from his parents. As such, the misunderstood rich aristocrat often found himself in the solace of Chastain’s character and often went out of his way to make her happy.
