HBO’s The Penguin has been doing all sorts of things: some horrifying, some hilarious, and some cannon. Speaking of cannon, the latest episode of the show has introduced something in the Batman universe and it is equal parts surprising and confusing.

Surprising because no one even in their wildest dreams could have imagined that they would get to see TikTok of all things in the show and confusing because it makes us wonder if we have accidentally landed in the wrong universe. People were obviously unprepared when the app appeared out of nowhere on their screens. Not to mention in a show that focuses on a DC villain.

Fans have nothing but appreciation for The Penguin so far, and by the looks of it, this is not going to change anytime soon thankfully. It has been a delight to watch Colin Farrell‘s version of the character take over the screen and do all kinds of heinous crimes to keep his business running smoothly.

The show, as people already know, is not set in James Gunn’s DCU timeline. Instead, it is set in the timeline of Matt Reeves’ The Batman, released in 2021. After the success of the movie, a spin-off featuring Oswald Cobb (Oz)/The Penguin was announced and fans were quite excited to see if Farrell’s Oz would be able to outdo his predecessors.

In the most recent episode of the show, Oz plans to make a hostage exchange with Salvatore Maroni (Clancy Brown). This hostage turns out to be Sal’s spoiled influencer son Taj Maroni who posts his location on TikTok Live and it appears on Oz’s TikTok feed.

On one hand, the inclusion of TikTok in the show implies that the show is set in the same world as ours. On the other hand, it strips us of the illusion that we are immersed in Batman’s universe while we watch the show.

Considering that things work differently in that universe, it just does not add up that they too have TikTok and use phrases like “You’re cooked.” That said, no one is really complaining about these references, but it does make us wonder if there will be any consequences of such cannons in the long run.

Will There Be a Second Season of The Penguin?

The Penguin has stolen the hearts of fans and critics ever since it premiered on Max. Each new episode brings forth a new wave of excitement amidst fans as they wonder what is next for the crime lord. Naturally, this makes us wonder if there will be a second season of the show.

Recently, at the New York Comic-Con, Screen Rant interviewed The Penguin cast and creative team. During the interview, showrunner Lauren LeFranc addressed whether or not there will be a second season.

Gotham is ripe to tell so many stories, the comics have shown that through decades and decades. I love this version of Gotham too. I love all the characters that we’ve gotten to explore in this world. I think there’s always room for more of that. If the story can be even better, absolutely.

The show has been said to be a limited one so far. However, it would not be the first time that a limited series has been picked for another season considering its success and fan demand. So, hopefully, a second season will happen.

The Penguin is available for streaming on Max.
