The storyline of the limited series showcases the expansion of the gritty Gotham City that was created in 2022’s The Batman. Even though Robert Pattinson’s Batman doesn’t appear in it, The Penguin‘s plot sets up for Matt Reeves’ The Batman – Part II, which has been scheduled to release in 2027. The miniseries focuses on Oswald ‘Oz’ Cobb, who transforms from a nobody to a Gotham underworld gangster.

Will there be a follow-up on The Penguin?

At the 2025 Golden Globes award ceremony, Lauren LeFranc, the showrunner of The Penguin spoke to The Screenrant about the show’s success. Expressing her excitement at the overwhelmingly positive response, she said, “We were meant to be a limited series, so I’m really proud of the first season and the story that we made.” When asked if there would be any follow-up to the series or not, LeFranc added,

There’s more stories to tell there, for sure, if we can find the right idea or the right characters. I’m not sure about that yet, but I’m really proud of the work that we’ve done.

However, there’s a catch to it. Even if the showrunner is ready to take up new projects under Matt ReevesBatman universe, she would only give the greenlight on one condition. LeFranc shared, “For me, it’s just about making sure I can find a personal connection to that character and feel like I can do something unique and different with them.

Lauren LeFranc further described why she took up The Penguin, and said,

That’s what I felt like I found with Oz, and then in that world, I was able to bring in Sofia and all these other characters. So, for me, it’s always seeking something personal. And if I can latch onto that, I’d be honored to.

LeFranc and Reeves have always been very clear with their intention to keep The Penguin as a limited series. The Batman director moves on with his plan to make a standalone trilogy.
