“The pressure of it all got to me”: Iñaki Godoy Details His Struggle to Play the Biggest Role of His Career in One Piece Live Action
The live-action version of One Piece has become a runaway hit, and its cast undoubtedly deserves the credit for the success. From Emily Rudd’s spot-on portrayal of Nami to Mackenyu Arata’s Roronoa Zoro, each actor brought their character to life with a lot of energy.
The standout performance in this adaptation is definitely of Iñaki Godoy’s as Monkey D. Luffy. The young pirate’s energy is what makes One Piece special, and some people weren’t sure if it could work in live-action.
But Godoy proved them wrong. The Imperfects star brought Luffy’s spirit to life with his explosive energy on screen. Yet, it wasn’t easy for him to portray the character. He explained the struggles and hard work it took to get into the One Piece‘s protagonist’s shoes.
Iñaki Godoy’s Victory Over Adversary in One Piece Role
In an interview with The Laterals magazine, Iñaki Godoy talked about his exciting career, including his role as Luffy in One Piece. He admitted feeling some pressure at first, but it turns out he totally loves the character. The 20-year-old said:
“There were times when it was very hard, and the pressure of it all got to me. But you know, if you continue playing Luffy for a long time, his spirit takes over you and somehow you sometimes forget that you’re working on this massive production because you start to have fun like him.“
Godoy went on to describe playing Luffy as an absolute blast. Sure, the character has his serious moments, but Luffy’s core is all about living life on his own terms and embracing wild escapades. This easygoing spirit seeped into the Mexican actor’s own approach, making it a total joy to play the energetic captain of the Straw Hat Pirates on screen.
Iñaki Godoy Drops Hint About Season 2 Casting with Birthday Cake
Monkey D. Luffy had a birthday bash this week! Netflix, which is producing a live-action adaptation of One Piece Season 2, joined the celebrations in a special way. Iñaki Godoy, the actor portraying Luffy in the Netflix series, shared a birthday greeting for the character on May 5th, which also happens to be Children’s Day in Japan.
Godoy even had a special cake made for the occasion, but it might hold a secret (watch here on Netflix Japan’s YouTube channel). The cake was shaped like a giant candle with the number 3 burning on top. One Piece fans immediately noticed the resemblance to the character Mr. 3, known for his flaming hairstyle. Could this be a sneaky hint about the casting for season 2? We’ll have to wait until the new season sets sail in 2025 to find out for sure.
