Goodbyes are bittersweet, and fans of the globally popular British boy band One Direction are certainly experiencing it right now as they mourn the death of member Liam Payne. He passed away recently at the age of 31, and the fandom is in shambles as they try to wrap their heads around the demise of the father of one.
Not so long ago, he was making many headlines after his ex-girlfriend, Maya Henry, made some shocking revelations. Two years ago, he made some comments about the band that resulted in huge backlash from the fans. Later, he apologized for his comments in a video he released on YouTube.
Liam Payne Issued an Emotional Apology for His Criticism of One Direction
Born in England, Liam Payne auditioned for The X-Factor for the first time in 2008. However, he did not make it through that time. He auditioned for a second time in 2010 and was put in the band, One Direction along with four other contestants, namely- Harry Styles, Louis Tomlinson, Niall Horan, and Zayn Malik.
Signed to Simon Cowell’s Syco Entertainment, the band achieved global success in a very short time. Payne was often labeled as the unofficial leader of the band due to his responsible and mature demeanor. He was a member of the band for six years until it went on an indefinite hiatus. Thereafter, he embarked on a solo career and collaborated with numerous artists.
Payne was successful as a solo artist but was not able to replicate the same kind of success as the band. During his appearance on Logan Paul’s Impaulsive podcast in 2022, he made some comments about the band that landed him in troubled waters. He realized his mistakes later and issued a public apology in a video released on YouTube, in which he also discussed rehabilitation. He also admitted that his former friends helped him get through the tough time.
The rest of the boys really stuck by me, and when I needed them the most, they kind of came to the rescue. Even Zayn [Malik], as well, which is why I did send him a little thank you online, actually.
He had publicly addressed his addiction issues before as well. Except for a few slips here and there, he was always very supportive of his former bandmates, and they seemed to do the same for him.
Liam Payne Addressed His Drinking Issues During His Time in the Band
Fame can be a very tricky thing when someone is young and can be easily manipulated to be a certain way. The members of One Director were no different. Every member had their own demons to deal with after the band went on hiatus. Some talked about it more often than others.
In an interview with Men’s Health in 2019, Payne reflected on how the band’s sudden rise to fame was a little hard to deal with and even a little lonely at times. This led to him turning to drinking to cope.
It’s almost like putting the Disney costume on before you step up on stage and underneath the Disney costume I was pissed quite a lot of the time because there was no other way to get your head around what was going on.
He explained that performing the same set of songs over and over again for hundreds of concerts was tough. He insisted that it was fun, but some parts of it got a little too “toxic” for them. Hopefully, the management teams of such young artists will make sure to treat them better.
