TVD is regarded as one of the fan-favorite shows despite it receiving mixed reviews initially. Even though the show concluded in 2017 and the actors went on to take up other projects, the craze of the show remains the same to date. But ardent fans have also pointed out one storyline that could have done wonders if writers hadn’t decided to mess it up.

Did writers ruin storylines on The Vampire Diaries because of fan service?

The popularity of The Vampire Diaries is unmatched, especially when it comes to couples on the show. Damon Salvatore and Elena Gilbert, played by Ian Somerhalder and Nina Dobrev, were one of the top fan-favorite couples on the show, followed by Klaus and Caroline, played by Joseph Morgan and Candice Accola.

However, where Damon & Elena found their happy ending, Klaus and Caroline didn’t, as Klaus went on to star in his show, The Originals, which centered on the original vampires. A Reddit user mentioned that Klaus and Caroline were just ‘the right people, at the right time, but wrong writers.’ Fans wanted the duo to be the endgame because every time Klaus would be near Caroline, he’d have this super soft energy to him compared to his short-tempered nature. A user mentioned,

I love how Klaus had Labrador energy around her.

But at the same time, fans were also reminded about all the bad things Klaus did to Caroline’s loved ones. The user wrote, ‘Made both her best friend and boyfriend orphans. Tortured her to teach her a lesson. Forced himself on her throughout the whole S3, not hearing no for an answer.‘ People noted that their chemistry was insane, and where writers could have let them create magic, they drove him away to New Orleans. Another user wrote, ‘I’d rather say right people, wrong time, wrong writers.

But another commented that Damon Salvatore did the same things to Elena, but she still fell for him, and everyone simply admired that couple. A user replied by stating,

Because those writers wrote the series according to what the fans wanted.

According to fans, the writers of The Vampire Diaries had given so much importance to the couple that worked well amongst the fans that they completely forgot that sometimes the characters wouldn’t even have chemistry. The fans also mentioned how Damon Salvatore started to have a much better bond with Bonnie Bennett, played by Kat Graham when they were transported to the 1994 prison. They bonded and allied to defeat Kai Parker.

Fans also complained that Damon’s entire personality was appealing because he was a grey-shade character, but then after being with Elena, he started to change, which disappointed the fans. Someone pointed out that the writers wouldn’t let any of the couples be happy if it wasn’t for Damon and Elena, which is why everyone had a sad ending except them.

It is not wrong to say that some storylines that had so much potential in The Vampire Diaries but were either ruined or did not get any attention because they didn’t serve right in fan service.

The Vampire Diaries & The Originals star Joseph Morgan weighs in on Klaroline

Joseph Morgan was without a doubt one of the most favorite characters on The Vampire Diaries and The Originals. The actor plays Niklaus Mikaelson, a vampire-werewolf hybrid on the show. In his conversation with TV Guide in 2018, the actor addressed the long-awaited question about Klaroline, as Caroline was supposed to appear in the final season of The Originals to knock some sense into Klaus.

Talking about Candice Accola’s appearance, Morgan said,

She’s on the show for the final season for a number of episodes, and we have a bunch of scenes together. Not everyone is going to be satisfied because there is no way that we could ever satisfy everyone. I am certainly satisfied with the ending that those characters have, and I hope it pays tribute to the investment people have made in them.

The creator of the show, Julie Plec, confirmed that there would be no romantic ending for the characters despite the fans wanting that for them. She hinted that there is for sure a deep connection between Klaus and Caroline, but it’s going to turn into a romantic story.

I’ve always loved the very strange and layered dynamic between Klaus and Caroline. I mean, it has been vengeful, it has been destructive, it has been evil, it has been weirdly warm, and it showed a side of Klaus and his humanity that we never thought he had.

Julie Plec added that the feelings Klaus had for Caroline had always lingered at the back of his mind, but their relationship when they met in The Originals was more mature. She also noted that Caroline is one of the few people outside of Klaus’ family who can speak straight to him, and at times he needs that. It’s like a friendship of honesty, a little bit of antagonism, and good advice.

Alas, it seems fans might never get their perfect Klaroline ending. The Vampire Diaries and The Originals are available to stream on Netflix and Amazon Prime Video.
