An animated film with a star-studded cast including Lupita Nyong’o, Pedro Pascal, and Kit Connor, The Wild Robot, released a one-minute clip and had the Internet buzzing. It featured the Black Panther actress in the role of an intelligent robot named Roz, waking up after washing ashore on a remote island after a shipwreck. Overcast skies and thunder made the background while the footage highlighted the smooth animation quality.

Designed to look like a moving painting, with brushstroke-like textures, the film’s use of a washed-out watercolor look also came out to display. Amid a high level of attention to detail, the clip progressed to show the robot coming to discover an intact egg among other crushed ones and a bird’s remains. Using its technology to scan, it discovers a living embryo, which will go on to become Connor’s character, Brightbill.

Based on a children’s book by Peter Brown, the film, in just those few minutes, managed to preview a solemn setting and foreground for its upcoming storyline. Additionally, its distinct animation style and unique color palette, as shown in trailers, will help viewers associate with it on a personal level, something that has found sufficient mentions in its early reviews alongside 100% critical approval.

Current box-office trends give The Wild Robot a shot at success

The one-minute clip from The Wild Robot attracted many eyeballs and did its job of instigating curiosity. Fortunately, if current viewing trends sway in its favor, then the animation has a good chance of scoring a decent box office run. Up until now, 2024 has proven to be a big year for animated movies, with Inside Out 2 being the biggest evidence of this statement.

The Pixar movie currently sits as not only the highest-grossing animated movie of all time but also as the biggest earner of this year. Moreover, as many as three animations feature in the list of the best ten revenue earners in the year so far, with Despicable Me 4 and Kung Fu Panda 4 being the other two aside from the Disney sequel.

On another hand, The Wild Robot may not have smooth sailing. The Chris Hemsworth starrer animation, Transformers One, will drop in theaters just about ten days before its release, possibly handing it a major competition. However, the mass appeal nature of this film combined with its heartwarming tale may give it an edge in theaters.

The Wild Robot will arrive in theaters on September 27, 2024.
