In a recent phone call interview with W magazine, famous singer Mariah Carey did not shy away from admitting that she was a ‘Diva’. The All I Want For Christmas Is You singer embraced the word as she gave the interview while in the Bathtub. She also shared that being referred to as the ‘Queen of Christmas’ her childhood Christmas celebrations were not as idyllic.
The singer further went into describing her childhood upbringing with an Opera singer for a mother. And also the feeling of being ‘othered’ as a biracial child growing up in a predominantly white community. Carey discussed her new book called The Christmas Princess in the same interview. She shared that it was about a girl who ends up helping through music.
Mariah Carey Addresses ‘Diva’ Title Given to Her By People
It is clear now that Mariah Carey chose the Diva life as she recently admitted that she was not ashamed to be called one. ‘Diva’ is a word applied to celebrities especially females that are known for being temperamental. It has gained negative connotations over time. However, the Hero singer is not ashamed to be called one. In a recent interview with W magazine, Carey discussed it among many other topics. The interview was done via a phone call and the singer was in her bathtub all throughout the interview. Proving that she embraces her Diva title. She told W magazine,
“There are things people are not aware of because this whole quote-unquote ‘diva’ thing is always what people see first,”
A famous singer that Carey is known for having rivalries is Jennifer Lopez since they both started their career around the same. Lopez has also gained a reputation for being a Diva throughout her career. Now the Songbird Supreme has also admitted that she is just as big of a real-life Diva as her rival Lopez. While having the interview in her bubble bath, she shared, “Yes, I play into it. And yes, part of that is real. I can’t help it,”
She gave the reason behind the attitude as partly a ‘response’ to her upbringing. She shared,
“Like, what do you do if you grew up with an opera singer for a mother, who went to Juilliard and made her debut at Lincoln Center?”
Further, Carey also added that her Diva personality was also partly an ‘Affectation’. That is being and acting what people expect her to be like. According to her she just played into the part sometimes.
Mariah Carey Talks About Her New Book And Her own Childhood
In the same phone call interview with W magazine, Mariah Carey also shared some bits about her childhood. While having a bubble bath, she shared how her childhood was not as sparkly as people imagined. She told the magazine,
“People think I had this princess-style life or whatever, a kind of fairy-tale existence where I just emerged, like, ‘Here I am!’ And that is not what it is,”
According to Carey growing up biracial in a predominantly white community, she had always felt ‘othered’. She also described her childhood as dysfunctional and messed-up. And therefore growing up in such a situation and having a big transformation had been a real joy for her.
Talking about her new book called The Christmas Princess, the Hero singer gave a little peak into the story. She shared that the story was about a girl named Little Mariah who ends up helping people through her music by rising above her circumstances.
