“There is no Ken without Barbie”: Ryan Gosling Is Upset After Oscars Ignores Margot Robbie and Greta Gerwig’s Historic Work in Barbie
The Academy Awards have disappointed Ryan Gosling, who played Ken in last year’s summer blockbuster Barbie. The actor has stated his massive hit project did not earn the deserved Oscar nod, despite his co-star Margot Robbie and director Greta Gerwig’s incredible work.
In his statement, Gosling emphasized Robbie and Gerwig’s contribution to Barbie, for which they deserved to be nominated in two major Oscar categories. The Blade Runner star despite receiving a nod himself for Best Supporting role, found no happiness after he noticed the absence of Margot Robbie and Greta Gerwig’s names among other deserving nominees.
Ryan Gosling Disappointed After Margot Robbie and Greta Gerwig Fail To Secure Major Oscar Nods
Greta Gerwig‘s Barbie was last year’s top-grossing movie that dethroned some of the most iconic projects including Marvel’s superhero films. Considering its triumphant success and global recognition, it was expected that the leading cast members Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling with their incredible director will secure Oscar nods in major categories. However, a rude awakening about the nominees of two major categories has left Gosling high and dry.

Even though the First Man actor received an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor, he was settled to witness that Margot Robbie’s name wasn’t included under the category of Best Actress and the director Gerwig’s in the Best Director Award. Following the discontentment, Ryan Gosling issued a statement and wrote:
“There is no Ken without Barbie, and there is no Barbie movie without Greta Gerwig & Margot Robbie… No recognition would be possible for anyone on the film without their talent, grit, and genius.”
Emphasizing the cultural impact that could happen only because of Robbie and Gerwig’s contribution, Gosling added:
“Against all odds with nothing but a couple of soulless, scantily clad, and thankfully crotchless dolls, they made us laugh, they broke our hearts, they pushed the culture and they made history.”
Greta Gerwig did not get a nomination for Best Director, but she was recognized alongside her husband, Noah Baumbach, for Best Adapted Screenplay. Whereas Margot Robbie was honored as the producer of Barbie. Apart from the Academy Awards, Barbie swept accolades this awards season during the Golden Globes 2024.
Barbie Actress America Ferrera Expresses Dismay Over Margot Robbie’s Deserving Oscar Nod
Not only Ryan Gosling, but Barbie star America Ferrera has also spoken about Margot Robbie’s deserving Oscar nomination. The actress herself received her first Academy Award nomination for her portrayal of Gloria in Barbie. While speaking with Variety, the Special Correspondents star expressed her excitement and disappointment at the same time. She said:
“I still haven’t really been able to get in my feelings because I’m still on like the top layer of ‘I can’t even believe that this is real… I feel it so deeply and am so grateful for their love and support and in this moment. It’s been a long ‘Barbie’ journey — I mean longer even for Greta and Margot and Noah.”
While sharing her thoughts and gratitude, Ferrera added:
“It’s been years and years and years — everyone’s really excited that we get to celebrate and to end this journey at the biggest party of the year… “I was incredibly disappointed that they weren’t nominated [talking about Robbie and Gerwig]”
Gosling’s Barbie even became the most nominated picture at the 2024 Critics Choice Awards under different categories. However, despite all the prestigious awards and recognition, Robbie and Gerwig’s absence in the major categories has turned out to be extremely shocking for many.
Barbie is available to stream on Max.
