Spider-Verse producers Phil Lord and Christopher Miller have gotten the chance to produce, direct, and write many great projects over the years. The duo made their feature film directorial debut with the 2009 movie Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs. The two of them were fired after a year of working on the project in early 2002, only to be rehired in 2006.

Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs is an animated movie franchise that is adapted from the eponymous 1978 children’s book written by Judi and Ron Barrett. The first installment of this movie series was written and directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller was received well at the box office and was even praised by the critics. Although the movie has a sequel, it has not been confirmed whether or not it will have a threequel.

Spider-Verse Producer Made A Shocking Revelation

A sequel to Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs was released in 2013 which saw Phil Lord and Christopher Miller return as executive producers. Now, nearly ten years after the release of the last Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, a fan Alec Reid Gunther tagged Lord and Miller on X (formerly Twitter) expressing his faith in the fact that they will be able to make a third movie in the franchise.

Surprisingly, Lord took to his official X (formerly Twitter) handle philiplord to respond to the fan, saying:: “There was a script! The title was PLANET OF THE GRAPES.” The answer is quite amusing and has managed to give fans a newfound hope that maybe the project can be revived. While Lord’s partner Christopher Miller has not commented on this yet, fans are hopeful that the franchise might get a new movie.

Sony Pictures Group’s member Colombia Pictures’ Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs was a commercial and critical success as the movie was released to mostly positive reviews and earned $243 million against an estimated production budget of $100 million. Even the second installment did quite well as it grossed over $274 million worldwide.

Talking of threequels, the development of the much anticipated third installment of the animated Spider-Man franchise Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse has been put on halt owing to the ongoing WAG and SAG-AFTRA strikes. Although the movie was slated to be released in 2024, the release date has been removed making the whole ordeal uncertain.

Phil Lord and Christopher Miller have been collaborating with Sony for quite some time now. They were offered to direct an animated film for the fan-favorite superhero Spider-Man in 2015. The movie Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse, released in 2018 had Lord and Miller take the position of the producers with Lord co-writing the script. Following the movie’s success, the duo continued helming the sequels.

The sequel, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, released in 2023 performed even better than its predecessor. Hopefully, the next in line will also be as good as the last two if not better. Maybe Lord and Miller will spare a thought or two for the long-abandoned Andy Samberg starrer Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs franchise after they are done with the Spider-Verse.
