“There’s no way, you just look too young”: Nia Long Was Denied Movie Role With Denzel Washington Because of Her Looks

Idealizing Denzel Washington, Long wished to star alongside the actor in a movie. However, working with Washington seemed to be a far-fetched dream, based on the rejection she faced for her appearance.

Achieving the milestone of 37 years of service in the entertainment industry, Nia Long collaborated with different actors throughout her career. Flexing her collaboration with Meryl Streep, one of the greatest actresses in the industry, Long mentioned her surprise when Streep recognized her.
Complimenting Meryl Streep, the 52-year-old actress stated, “She is my favorite actress and probably one of the best actresses in this business.” Expressing her honest opinions, Long further added, “There’s something very tender about her and warm. I just love that.” Flexing her collaboration, the 52-year-old stated, “I met her and she was like ‘Hi, Nia Long.’ I was like, ‘You know my name?’”
Apart from idealizing Meryl Streep, Long was also enamored by Denzel Washington and his fabulous acting skills. Willing to work with Washington, Nia Long appeared for the audition. However, despite her reputed collaboration and prominent work in the Black cinema, the 52-year-old faced major discrimination and rejection. Nia Long Faced Rejection Based On Her Looks
Despite her bold and striking persona, the 52-year-old claimed, how she was often refused roles based on her appearance. However, among all, the rejection that affected her the most was when she was refused the role alongside Denzel Washington. “There was a time when I was told there’s no way, you just look too young” Nia Long claimed. Forced into the polite perception of her young looks taking her opportunities away, Long was made to believe the rejections weren’t based on racism.
However, realizing the actual reason, the actress later claimed, “I think that I’ve matured as a woman and as an actress and I think I would [be] perfect to work opposite him now.” Without shying away from the humiliation she faced, Long stood to compliment Denzel Washington on his work. “I admire his ability to transcend all the stereotypes of who we are as black people.” the 52-year-old mentioned.
Further, she stated how Hollywood’s perception of Washington came in her way of achieving her dream. She theorized how Will Smith and Denzel Washington are not seen as black by the industry. “They see them as superstars” Long claimed.
“I suspect they pair them with a white or a Latina star because that takes the pressure off their having to market the movie as a black film, which in my opinion is completely ridiculous.” Long detailed.
Disappointed with how she was rejected based on alleged racism, the actress believed it would be great to see more films featuring black families. Rather than focusing on the appearance and marketing of the movie, Nia Long claimed the sheer storyline and acting would do wonders.
