“They came out of the same clone lab”: Ryan Reynolds Eating Punches For Dwayne Johnson and Chris Evans’ Ghastly ‘Red One’ Reviews is Super Hilarious
- 'Red One' faces mixed reviews as Dwayne Johnson and Chris Evans face criticism for their generic roles.
- Fans sarcastically dragged Ryan Reynolds, comparing his and Evans' shared typecast image.
- Reynolds' experiments in other roles after 'Deadpool' have not been majorly successful.
It sometimes gets difficult to escape the typecast that the movie industry puts on its leading actors. When an actor is lucky enough to bag a certain popular image or a hit role, then it often becomes a challenge to come out of that mold.
Lately, it seems like Dwayne Johnson and Chris Evans have fallen victim to this because of their new Christmas action film, Red One. What is funnier and also a deeper problem with Hollywood’s star system is that fans have been involving Ryan Reynolds in this whole scenario.
Red One Stumbles While Fans Miss Ryan Reynolds
Red One is about the head of North Pole security, played by Dwayne Johnson, who is going on a mission to find kidnapped Santa Claus, played by J.K. Simmons, with the help of a hacker, played by Chris Evans.
Despite having such big names in the cast, critics have not been very kind to this action comedy so far. The early reviews have been mostly mixed, and the film is currently rated 34% on Rotten Tomatoes. Judging by the critics’ reviews, the film might be another misfire in Dwayne Johnson‘s filmography.
Johnson’s latest works are replicating his constant hit-or-miss performances throughout his career. Although he is one of the highest-paid actors at present times and comes with his natural charisma, Johnson has often been criticized by both critics and fans for being stuck in his usual big guy roles and generic films, which sometimes click, sometimes don’t.
However, what has drawn attention lately is the bizarre involvement of Ryan Reynolds in Red One. Fans online are sarcastically insisting that they are surprised that Reynolds missed this movie.
RED ONE (2024, Kasdan, *) Such a noisy, witless puddle of CGI puke I can’t believe Ryan Reynolds isn’t in it.

Even though I’ve seen Chris Evans in all the posters and in all the trailers, I still keep thinking that Ryan Reynolds is in the movie instead of him

Reynolds and Evans toss a coin whenever one of these pops up.

Based on the trailers, I imagine the Chris Evans role was probably written for Reynolds https://t.co/8XKYv0936D

It is not completely unexpected either since Evans and Reynolds both have developed a fairly similar image of action-comedy performers. Evans has lately tried to break his Captain America mold with The Gray Man, Ghosted, and Pain Hustlers, but it seems like none of these performances were enough to change his image.
Similarly, Ryan Reynolds has also been criticized for being stuck around his Deadpool identity, even in his real-life persona. Although it might be a bit too soon to judge Red One‘s fate, the criticism that the actors are facing can’t be denied completely.
Ryan Reynolds Had a Rocky Career Outside Deadpool
This whole typecasting and stuck-in-a-shell phenomenon can be observed in Ryan Reynolds’ career. Reynolds has always been tied to Deadpool since the day he wore the red suit, and his search for success beyond that has not been plain sailing.
The Deadpool movies have been his biggest hits, with Deadpool & Wolverine becoming the biggest R-rated movie after earning over $1.3 billion worldwide (as per Box Office Mojo). Some of his other live-action box-office hits outside Deadpool identity include Free Guy, Safe House, The Proposal, and Mississippi Grind. However, none of them could match the success of his Deadpool performance.
Moreover, none of these movies came out after Deadpool, except Free Guy, which again shows how his other movies failed to live up to expectations after he became Deadpool. In an earlier interview with Los Angeles Times, Reynolds opened up about the reasons for his unpopular movie choices saying,
I’ve done movies that I shouldn’t have done because they were going to pay me, and that was at the time very appealing and exciting. When you arrive in Hollywood, and you come from where I come from, you think, ‘Of course, I’m gonna do that.’
However, Reynolds has managed to turn his typecast image into an asset in his career. Instead of being bitter about it, the actor has found ways to make it work in his different projects and businesses.
Red One is now running in theaters.
The Deadpool franchise is available to stream on Disney+.
