Zooey Deschanel Was Not Happy With The Ending Of 500 Days Of Summer

During an exclusive interview with the media outlet Entertainment Weekly in 2019, actor duo Zooey Deschanel and Joseph Gordon-Levitt spoke about their movie 500 Days Of Summer. The actor-turned-singer expressed her disappointment over her character and the ending of the movie. According to Zooey Deschanel, her character Summer in the movie was perceived as a negative one because she is the reason for Tom’s heartbreak. She said-

“It is 100 percent from Tom’s point of view, which we’ve talked about before, but it’s one thing people very much misunderstand about the movie. They think Summer’s a villain,”

Joseph Gordon-Levitt further added-

“And a lot of it has to do with this voiceover, and I think that’s sort of part of the point, that the voiceover sounds authoritative, so you believe that it’s true. We all think that our perspective is authoritative, and Tom thinks that his perspective is authoritative. But life’s actually a lot more subjective than that,”

According to Zooey Deschanel, the ending could have been much different if the entire story had been told from Summer’s perspective. She was not entirely happy with the ending of the movie.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt played the character of a hopeless romantic, Tom Hansen who feels that he might lose the love of his love. Zooey Deschanel played Summer, Tom’s obsession. The movie is majorly based on the flashbacks Tom’s character is subjected to as he reflects on his bond with Summer and realizes that they were never meant to be together. He later falls in love with a woman named Autumn.

Zooey Deschanel On Her Character In 500 Days Of Summer

According to Zooey Deschanel, her character in the movie 500 Days Of Summer is one of the most misunderstood characters ever played by her. During an interview with The Guardian in 2022, the actor spoke about her character and mentioned that she is straightforward and does not want any relationship. She said-

“And also, it’s like the moment she starts expressing herself — the moment she starts being like, “Okay, I can trust you, I’ll tell you about myself” — the voiceover drowns her out.”

Zooey Deschanel mentioned about the expectations the audience had from the character of Summer. She said-

I got that take from day one. It’s a very emotional response. People want the characters to be together, but that not happening makes the movie interesting. She is upfront that she doesn’t want a relationship, but he ignores her. The most telling scene is when she tells him: “I’ve never told anybody that before,” and he makes it about himself. He is fixated on external details – such as her liking the Smiths – that has nothing to do with who she is as a person. To anyone who thinks Summer is the villain, I say: think a little deeper.

The romantic drama has been narrated from the perspective of Tom Hansen, played by Joseph Gordon-Levitt. With an IMDb rating of 7.7 out of 10, 500 Days Of Summer is currently available on Apple TV.
