Mark Ruffalo on why he chose to play Duncan Wedderburn in Poor Things

In an interview with Screen Daily, Mark Ruffalo admits that he was tired of being Mark Ruffalo before he agreed to play Duncan Wedderburn in Poor Things. He talks about his experience of working on Poor Things,

“I’d never really done a period piece and I’d never really done an accent—successfully. So it was very daunting to me. It had to be forced. It wasn’t naturalistic or realistic. A big part of it was nailing that style, pushing it but making sure it was always grounded.”

The actor worked with British voice and dialect coach Neil Swain to carry out Duncan Wedderburn’s accent in the movie. Ruffalo added that he started to wonder if his character was just English or just full of shit if everything about him was pretense.

At The Hollywood Reporter’s Actors Roundtable with Robert Downey Jr, Andrew Scott, Paul Giamatti, Colman Domingo, and Jeffrey Wright, he discussed how he asked his director if he did not think he was right for the part. He said

“Yorgos just laughed at me. In the movie business, it is starting to feel like you’re a little bit in a box sometimes. But I had never played anything like that either. And I was scared, I mean, I saw his movies and I was in awe of them. So I was really scared. And he just laughed at me.”

The critics have appreciated Poor Things as well as the audience with Emma Stone sweeping awards for her brilliant performance as Bella Baxter. Ruffalo added that it was such a great turn and he got to do so much fun stuff in it and break the perceptions about him.
