‘This is So Uncomfortable to Watch’: Trans Community Blasts Johnny Depp for Misgendering iO Tillett Wright During Amber Heard Trial, Claim ‘He Witnessed Johnny Beating Amber’
Last month, during his legal battle against his ex-wife, Amber Heard, actor Johnny Depp misgendered author iO Tillett Wright while talking about the author in the court. The actor received backlash on social media and is being compared to singer Lizzo who added an ableist slur in her new song “Grrrls”.
Johnny Depp was criticized for misgendering iO Tillett Wright
A video is going viral on social media in which the actor can be seen talking about iO Tillett Wright in court. He said,
“She was born a female, if that’s the right terminology these days. Born a female, but she was, she had chosen, at a very young age, she decided that she was a male.“
iO Tillett Wright testified that he witnessed Johnny Depp beating Amber Heard. iO Tillett Wright recently addressed the misunderstandings regarding his pronouns, and admitted he does not like the use of “they/them.”
People on social media came after Johnny Depp for his statement
People on social media criticized the actor and compared him to singer Lizzo who added an ableist slur in her new song “Grrrls”. People pointed out that Lizzo used a slur in a song and had to remove it instantly, but Depp got away after constantly misgendering iO Tillett Wright.

The video is from Johnny Depp’s defamation trial
The video clip in which he can be seen misgendering the author is from Johnny Depp and Amber Heard’s court battle. The actor decided to sue Amber Heard after she claimed to be a victim of domestic abuse in an op-ed she wrote in 2018. On June 1st, the jury found that the editorial was about him and awarded the actor $10 million in compensatory and $5 million in punitive damages. Amber Heard also received $2 million in compensatory damages.
