A timely release around the holiday season, the musical fantasy movie Wonka milked the cash cow to the fullest by collecting $125 million domestically while the global total stands at around $400 million. Timothée Chalamet leads the cast of the movie in the titular role with Olivia Colman, Hugh Grant, and Rowan Atkinson in supporting roles. In a conversation with Deadline, AMC Entertainment CEO Adam Aron said,
“I really want to salute David Zaslav and Warner Bros for its courageous decision to hold its Christmas movie slate intact. The entire movie ecosystem needs for Hollywood’s major studios to continue to release movies theatrically in significant quantity, so that we all can survive and thrive. And when studios do, moviegoers the world over come out to theaters in droves. In Warner’s case, they were rewarded by moviegoers to the tune of $700 million. That is an impressive haul.”

Directed by Paul King, the movie follows Willy Wonka’s journey as a young chocolatier who dreams of creating an empire based on chocolates. The light-hearted story attracted children and adults alike, filling theatres worldwide. Wonka alone was able to take Warner Bros to the top as the other flicks did not chart as well as the production house hoped, including Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom.
The Aquaman sequel failed to garner the love and support of the masses like usually Marvel movies do, which by the way, are also going downhill. Out of the $200 million budget, the movie only collected $250 million which will be divided between marketing and promotion costs after the theatres take their cut.

Along with Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, The Color Purple, which is based on Alice Walker’s ceiling-shattering novel, was released domestically by Warner Bros and managed to earn $47.1 million. With its foundation in a socially relevant topic, the movie is set to sweep at the Academy Awards and make Warner Bros come out on top again.
It appears that the box office is still playing catch up in terms of revenue with the year before the pandemic hit. 2019 saw a massive collection of $11.4 billion compared to $9 billion in 2023. With the chart-busting success of Barbie and Wonka, Warner Bros indeed had a year of great success.
