Hugh Grant reveals an early mock-up of Oompa-Loompa alarmed his children

English actor Hugh Grant, who was recently seen as Oompa-Loompa in Paul King’s Wonka, revealed that the director had sent him an early mock-up of the character naked. In his recent interview with People magazine, the actor noted,

“Paul, quite early on in the editing process, sent me a mock-up of the Oompa Loompa stark naked. And my little children were a little alarmed at that.”

The Notting Hill actor explained the reason for the director sending the naked mock-up was to figure out the details. He said the visual effects team was figuring out the skin color and the way hair works in addition to other details for the character during the process. He added that in the process of the animation for the character, it had no clothes on.

Grant mentioned with a laugh during the interview,

“It was one of the most disturbing things I’ve ever seen in my life. If it ever leaks out, a generation of children will be scarred. The figure was very delicately pixelated. There was nothing untoward. It’s just once you’ve seen, you can’t unsee it.”

Hugh Grant noted that he said yes to playing the character alongside Timothée Chalamet’s Willy Wonka because he is in the ‘freak phase’ of his career. He is down to playing weirder characters, adding that it took very little convincing from Paul King for him to play the character.

Hugh Grant ‘hated’ playing Oompa-Loopma in Wonka

The Love Actually star stated at the press conference Wonka revealed that he hated the experience of filming CGI scenes for the movie. He described playing Oompa-Loopma in Wonka as like wearing a crown of thorns because of the camera rig around his head. He said via Metro.uk,

“I made a big fuss about it. I couldn’t have hated the whole thing more.”

Hugh Grant mentioned that he was unsure about whether he was supposed to act with his body or not, and he never received a satisfactory answer. He added that what he did with his body was terrible, and it’s all been replaced with an animator.

The actor dwelled upon how the dancing aspect of the character should have been fun, but the animator did it. He said,

“It’s very confusing, with CGI now, you can’t tell what’s going on.”

The English actor joked that he slightly hates making films, but he has a lot of children and needs the money, which is why he said yes to the character.

Wonka is now playing in theatres.
