Todd Philips Says That Marvel Studios Can’t Make Something Like Joker
Joker is the kind of cinema which hasn’t been seen in superhero live action history before. After winning the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival it has certainly proven that it stands apart from the general crop of superhero movies which are peddled out by Marvel. This is something which director Todd Philips believes as well.
Joker Is Not A Formulaic Marvel Superhero Movie
By now, anyone who has seen the trailers of the movie would know that Joker goes in a completely unknown direction. These directions aren’t charted by Marvel Studios or most comic book movies in general. Todd Philips, director of Joker says that it was actually always the plan.
In an interview with The New York Times he says that:
“You can’t beat Marvel – it’s a giant behemoth. Let’s do something they can’t do.”
The Marvel Cinematic Universe is known for starting it all – the craze in superheroes and the concept of a connected universe. But Philips made Joker a smaller film which stands alone from the rest of the DCEU. Moreover; instead of a superhero, it stars a prominent Batman villain. The director has himself also shut down the idea that Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker could appear in Matt Reeves’ The Batman.
Todd Philips Thought of Developing Stand-Alone DC Movies
DCEU fans will find it interesting that it was Philips who actually brought the idea to do several standalone movies based on DC characters to Warner Bros. It means that there could be more such movies if Joker is a success which seems likely. Even though the film is yet to be released worldwide, but early predictions for Joker saying that it could make close to $103 million in its opening weekend.
Joker is directed by Todd Philips and stars Joaquin Phoenix, Robert De Niro, Zazie Beetz and more. The movie can bee seen in theatres from October 4.
