Christopher McQuarrie defends Tom Cruise starrer Mission Impossible 7
During his appearance on Empire Spoiler Specials podcast, Mission Impossible 7 director Christopher McQuarrie spoke about the criticism the movie starring Tom Cruise has received due to the level of exposition throughout which some fans and critics mentioned seems like a drag on for the story.
The director, however, said, “Yes, I know for a lot of people there’s too much exposition in the movie. You wouldn’t feel so if I took it all out. You would trade exposition for confusion. And people who feel things are explained too many times, I congratulate you. You are the sharpest student in the class. You’re paying very close attention, and you’re listening to all the dialogue. I assure you not everyone is, not all the time.”
It has to be noted that most of the exposition surrounds an AI villain named Entity and a human emissary played by Esai Morales as Gabriel, explaining to the audience how AI works throughout the movie. Throughout the movie, in different circumstances, there is an explanation of what an Entity is and how it came to its full power and motives. Cruise’s character Ethan Hunt in the movie is trying to figure out how to gain access to the counter technology, which some fans and critics said was not needed and felt like a drag on the movie.
Christopher McQuarrie feels the exposition served to evoke the emotions
The director further said in the interview that he does not feel that the exposition regarding AI Entity was a drag on the movie because it served as a perfect medium to evoke emotions in the audience. He said,
“You would not feel the things you feel if you did not know the things you know. The art of it is concealing the vegetables as best you can. The dialogue works for some people, it doesn’t work for other people. I will endeavor to do better. Do I feel the criticisms? Absolutely. Would I change anything? No. Do I wish I could? Absolutely. Under all the circumstances, certainly not.”
The director also explained that he, along with Tom Cruise, had explored nearly every possible option for the villain, which is how they landed on AI as a villain for the seventh installment, keeping in mind the increased use of AI in today’s world.
Writer Paul Schrader, popularly known for his work on Taxi Driver, has noted that the movie Mission: Impossible 7 could have been better written off with artificial intelligence using the right prompts.
Christopher McQuarrie spoke about the noble death of a beloved character
Rebecca Ferguson’s character Ilsa Faust finally met her fate in the seventh installment of the franchise after being killed by the movie’s antagonist as she was being chased through the streets of Venice to save Hayley Atwell’s character Grace.
The director had shared with Empire regarding the character’s death, “It’s a very heroic death for that character. It is not in any way, shape, or form disposable. It’s a noble and heroic death. That, to me, is the hardest thing to find for a character.”
McQuarrie also said that he understands that the actress’ character is one of the most loved characters in the franchise and he was ready for the backlash after she was killed off. He added that he knew people would be upset, but it is not what emotion that character instills in the protagonist but it is the value of that character’s death.
