On being asked, about how Fox Studios canceled the show and Netflix opened its doors, Tom Ellis said-
“At that point, we had already done three seasons, and the first season was like, what they call a half season, 13 episodes and then we did a full 22 episodes of biggies and then they canceled it.”
Michael Rosenbaum interrupted
“How did you feel about it?”
Tom Ellis confessed-
“Honestly, I was gutted. I was at a fan convention in Rome, having the time of my life, having just the whole weekend people confessing their love for the show. I was thousands of miles from where we’d film this thing, thinking my goodness, isn’t it strange that we got this fan base that is growing, growing and growing, and then literally I was in the minibus on the way back to the hotel from the convention. I got a call from our showrunner saying that Fox has just canceled our show.”

He further shared-
“I was crushed. I just didn’t expect it to happen. I was pretty devastated. I traveled back to London from Rome and I was just gutted I was talking to people on the phone and when I found out that Fox still hadn’t canceled the show yet, so we knew no one else knew. Somebody tipped me off, but I am not going to say who. Fox had planned to bury the news of the cancelation and announce something else the following weekend. I had a lot of emotions going on, and I decided that I would take it upon myself.”
Tom Ellis tweeted about the show and the huge fan base blasted the Fox Studios for almost cancelling the show. He single-handedly saved Lucifer from getting canceled.
Tom Ellis On Playing The Character Of Lucifer
During an interview with Variety In 2016, Tom Ellis spoke about playing the arrogant yet charismatic character of Lucifer. He said-
“I think I was wonderfully naïve about that, actually. [Laughs.] I read the script and literally, four or five pages in I thought, “this is something I really wanna do,” because it was so funny. So I didn’t think, I suppose, about the gravity of playing this character or what that means to lots of people. But obviously since accepting the role and doing it, yes, certain groups have come forward to express their displeasure about this. I always find it interesting when people comment on stuff they haven’t seen. It says more about them than about what we’re doing…”

He further shared-
“I come from a very religious household, growing up; my father’s a pastor, my uncle’s a pastor and my sister’s a pastor, and they’re all thrilled that I got this job and they’re able to understand what this show is, I suppose, which is a satire using the character of the devil to tell a redemption story.”
With an IMDb rating of 8.1 out of 10, Lucifer is currently available for streaming on Netflix.
