Jake Gyllenhaal played the antagonist in Tom Holland‘s Spiderman: Far From Home. His portrayal of Mysterio in the film was a hit. The actor had a successful run of films over the last few years. Surprisingly he was considered as a replacement for Tom Hardy in Suicide Squad.

Hardy was supposed to play Rick Flagg, the leader of the group that consists of Batman villains Deadshot, Joker, and Harley Quinn. However, he turned down to role due to a tight schedule. He was shooting the Western drama The Revenant during the time.

After the Venom star backed out, Gyllenhaal was considered to play the role. He garnered attention with his performance in Nightcrawler. He even worked with the DC Entertainment tentpole directed by David Ayer on End of Watch.

Based on DC Entertainment’s villains-forced-to-be-heroes characters the film featured a villainous cast that included Will Smith, Margot Robbie, and Jared Leto, with Jai Courtney and Cara Delevingne. It came out in 2016, followed by a sequel in 2021. However, Tom Holland’s Spider-Man co-star was not part of the film.

Gyllenhaal is one of the best actors and has his pick of some great roles in his acting career. He was offered to replace Tom Hardy in David Ayer’s film Suicide Squad. The film had a star-studded cast like Will Smith, Margot Robbie, and Viola Davis. Nevertheless, Gyllenhaal declined the part to pursue other options.

The role of Rick Flag further went to Joel Kinnaman, who did a semi-decent job of bringing the character to life. The film was a bit of a mess but collected $746 million worldwide. Its production budget was $175 million.

Suicide Squad is available to stream on HBO Max.
