Vinland Saga is one of those very few series that doesn’t have a single bad episode. In fact, each episode adds in some way to the overall thematic depth of the storyline. Despite being set in one of history’s most brutal eras, the Viking Age, the anime masterfully explores the cruelty of war and violence, along with the true meaning of freedom.
Still, of the anime’s 48 episodes across two seasons, the following 10 are arguably the most iconic. Whether for their philosophical themes, the sheer hype surrounding major events, or completely unprecedented turning points, each of these episodes stands out from the rest. We’ve even ranked them based on how impactful they’ve been to the overall storyline.
10. The Battle of London Bridge – Season 1, Episode 9

Arguably one of the most hyped moments in the entire anime came as early as Season 1, Episode 9. Titled The Battle of London Bridge, this is the episode where Thorfinn was forced to face his toughest opponent yet, Thorkell, during Askeladd’s mission to seize London Bridge. In terms of animation, the fight delivers one of the most dynamic action sequences in the entire anime, and watching Thorfinn get completely overwhelmed was both thrilling and painful. However, since the episode’s popularity stems primarily from its fight alone rather than its thematic depth, it ranks tenth on this list.
9. Way Home – Season 2, Episode 17

Since the episode doesn’t even focus on the main characters, we ranked it ninth on the list. Even so, it remains a masterpiece. The series took only a few episodes to establish Arnheid’s character before introducing her husband, Gardar. However, the tragic conclusion to their story in Season 2, Episode 17 reminded viewers of the cruelty of life during the Viking Age. The scene where Gardar is shown riding away in a slow-moving cart with Arnheid, imagining the life they could have shared if he hadn’t sought revenge, during his final moments, elevated the episode to another level.
8. Hometown – Season 2, Episode 24

After all the dust settles and everything is over, the final episode of Season 2 gives us one of the warmest farewells we could ever hope for. This is the episode where Thorfinn finally returns home to Iceland after years of being missing. The look in his mother Helga’s eyes the moment she sees him completely breaks down the emotional barriers of the viewers. She didn’t need any proof to recognize him as her son. One look is all it took for her to know that he is Thors’ son, Thorfinn. Because of its emotional depth and heartfelt reunion, this episode earns the eighth spot on the list.
7. The Light of Dawn – Season 1, Episode 14

The first time the anime truly dared to question the existence of God came in Season 1, Episode 14. By this point, we had become so accustomed to following Askeladd and his band of mercenaries that it was easy to overlook who they really were. Yet, no matter how charismatic Askeladd might be, he is ruthless to the core. So, when he indiscriminately slaughtered an entire village just to pillage its winter food supplies, the scene was heartbreaking to watch. The episode reached its emotional peak when a young village girl wondered what sin they had committed to deserve such a cruel fate.
6. Out of the Cradle – Season 1, Episode 18

The moment Canute transformed from his timid former self into a true king was nothing short of iconic. Since his introduction, Canute had always seemed indecisive because of the way he was raised. However, everything changed following the death of Ragnar and his witnessing the ruthless clash between Thorkell’s men and Askeladd’s mercenaries over his fate. Something awakened within Canute. Father Willibald’s speech on the meaning of love also inspired him to take matters into his own hands, making this one of the most defining moments in the series and well deserving of the sixth spot on this list.
5. Somewhere Not Here – Season 1, Episode 1

Though not everyone may agree, a series’ first episode plays a crucial role in its success. If Vinland Saga hadn’t premiered with such a philosophically rich opening plot, it might never have reached its current level of popularity. The entire sequence of Thors trying to save a slave from Halfdan, even selling nearly all of his belongings just to buy a dying man, who passes away soon after, perfectly shows how much freedom truly meant to him. Episode 1 itself foreshadows everything that Season 2 would later explore, which is why it easily ranks among the top five Vinland Saga episodes.
4. Oath – Season 2, Episode 9

Since the very beginning of Season 2, Thorfinn had constantly been haunted by his past sins. He didn’t even know whether he deserved to keep living. There was almost no life left in him. But in Episode 9, he experiences one of his worst nightmares. He was cast into a blood-soaked hell, where the countless lives he took are metaphorically shown to be holding him back from returning to a normal life. Yet the one who ultimately helps him overcome it is his psychological manifestation of Askeladd. Altogether, these moments make the episode deserving of the fourth spot.
3. A True Warrior – Season 1, Episode 4

While the first episode may have already hooked many fans into the series, the first major twist came in Season 1, Episode 4, when Thorfinn’s father, Thors, gave up his life to protect his son. It was an unfair battle from the very beginning, but still, Askeladd’s entire mercenary crew couldn’t initially detain Thors. Not even Bjorn could. In the end, Askeladd had to resort to dirty tactics to defeat him. He took young Thorfinn hostage, forcing Thors to lay down his sword while declaring, “A true warrior doesn’t need a sword.” He then embraced his death in exchange for his son’s safety.
2. Emperor of Rebellion – Season 2, Episode 22

After taking 100 punches from one of Canute’s strongest warriors just to earn a chance to speak with him, he stood his ground and hoped to convince Canute to back off from Ketil’s Farm. While that alone was an incredibly bold move, the highlight of the episode, and arguably of the entire anime so far, comes when Thorfinn is asked why he didn’t fight back, even though he could have easily defeated any of their warriors. To that, he simply replied, “I have no enemies.” This single line carries the core narrative theme of the entire anime, making this episode more than deserving of the second spot.
1. End of the Prologue – Season 1, Episode 24
Finally, the moment that changed everything in Vinland Saga came at the very end of Season 1. Hardly do we see a season finale this impactful to the overall storyline, which inarguably deserves the #1 spot on the list. The deaths of both King Sweyn and Askeladd, Canute succeeding to the throne, and even the salvation of Wales from the Danish king’s wrath all came together in one grand gesture. But the saddest part was Thorfinn’s state after realizing that the sole reason he had stayed alive was to avenge his father’s death by killing Askeladd, and that would never be possible anymore.
