Kim Petras is a well-known German singer-songwriter. She began her career as a solo musician with her own record label, BunHead. She gained attention after releasing her EP, One Piece of Tape, in March 2011. As an independent artist, she has released a number of hit songs, including Era 1, Clarity, and I Don’t Want It At All, which went on to top multiple Spotify music charts. Kim Petras may not have planned to make history when she collaborated with English artist Sam Smith on Unholy, a song about male infidelity and betrayal of the marriage ideal. Petras and Sam Smith, on the other hand, became the first publicly transgender and genderqueer solo singers, respectively, to reach the top of the Billboard Hot 100 charts with their single in October 2022.

In a prior 2019 interview with V magazine, Petras revealed that she encountered many challenges in the music industry and that being a transgender singer made it extremely difficult for her to sign with major labels. She highlighted that there are many obstacles and that the streaming era is changing everything. Everyone is in a state of panic. Major labels are seeking and striving for a new direction.

She also stated how many of her friends’ projects had been shelved. They are unable to release the music they desire, despite their great pride in their work. Petras shared how, as a writer, she has seen many people who have been unable to release their favorite tracks for years. It’s terrifying. She has been performing at every gay bar in order to grow her fan base.

The Clarity singer expressed how difficult it is for her as an artist. It’s probably an issue that women in general do not win Grammys, with only 10% of last year’s candidates being female. Because she is transgender, the artist claims she has faced numerous difficulties.

The German singer-songwriter, 30, was overwhelmed with emotion as she became the first transgender woman to win the best pop group duo performance award, alongside Sam Smith for Unholy, at Sunday’s gala, marking music’s biggest night. The Broken Glass singer took to Twitter to share her big win with her social media followers; she wrote,

“Omg, I’m a tranny with a Grammy.”

While many internet trolls bullied the singer for being transgender, it didn’t sit well with her loyal fans, who immediately supported the artist by tweeting how proud they were of her for winning the Grammy as the first transgender singer.

“I just want to thank all the wonderful transgender legends before me who kicked these doors up for me so I could be here tonight,” Petras said, as the audience cheered and applauded. “I don’t think I could be here without Madonna,” the Heart to Break singer continued, thanking the seven-time Grammy winner for fighting for LGBTQ rights.

Along with Sam Smith, she became the first transgender woman to win the best pop group/duo performance award.
