English actor Charles Dance is widely known for playing Tywin Lannister on HBO’s most popular and successful show, Game of Thrones. The actor has also been regarded for playing intimidating, authoritarian characters in movies and shows. Dance has been a part of some of the critically acclaimed projects, including The King’s Man, The Imitation Game, For Your Eyes Only, Dracula Untold, and more.

Charles Dance also portrayed the character of Lord Mountbatten in Netflix’s The Crown seasons three and four. He has been known as one of the versatile actors who have a very strong hold on the audience via his characters. But the actor’s one embarrassing moment in real life goes in the opposite direction of what he plays on-screen.

Playing patriarch to actors including Peter Dinklage, Lena Headey, and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau’s characters on HBO’s Game of Thrones, Charles Dance seems like a very tough guy. However, his real-life personality is far from what Tywin Lannister was, as Dance is the epitome of a gentleman.

In his interview with The Guardian, he was asked about his most embarrassing moment, to which he said,

I saw a woman I knew across the room and thought, ‘Oh, she’s having another baby.’ I congratulated her, and of course, she wasn’t pregnant.

The actor, who is extremely nice in real life, felt bad about assuming the woman was pregnant and decided to congratulate her without confirming if that was true. It is opposite to the character of Tywin Lannister, who would have felt as if the character had done some impeccable things on the show to have power over the Seven Kingdoms. He did not hesitate to get a human being killed, and that’s what makes Dance a brilliant actor.

In another interview with The Guardian, he addressed how he did not anticipate that Game of Thrones was going to be as huge as it was and is to date. He said,

None of us had any idea that it was going to be the most successful television series ever made. Especially as the pilot wasn’t great. If it had been made by the BBC, they would have pulled the plug. But Sky and HBO nursed it, and we began to be aware that we were dealing with a pretty classy act.

The actor mentioned he still had no idea that his character would become a charming monster. While speaking to Westeros about how Tyrion Lannister, played by Peter Dinklage, resembled Tywin in many ways, Dance agreed. He added that Tyrion is just small in stature, but he has great intellect, he’s guile, well-read, and is an extraordinary character.

Praising Dinklage, Dance said that the show was very lucky to have such a wonderful actor playing such an important character because he is extraordinarily gifted. The actor noted that Dinklage is a great guy to work with.

Charles Dance talks about playing bad guys and villains

During his interview with Westeros, Charles Dance was asked about his state of mind while picking a character to play on-screen and why they have been majorly bad guys or villains. He said,

I am attracted to the characters that make you ask questions, or make the audience ask questions—why is he doing that, what is he really about?—that’s great as far as I’m concerned. There’s an ambiguity about him; you’re never quite sure which way he’s going to go.

The actor explained that he very much likes his character on the show, and he does not think that Tywin is a bad guy at all. Dance explained that he was just a man of principles. He also added that he does not particularly look for a bad guy or a villain role, but for him, it’s the writing and how that character goes along the story that matters.

Dance pointed out that there are scenes where he has a fair amount of dialog, but most of the time his character is a man of few words. He also made sure to add that Tywin Lannister is a great character, and he wouldn’t describe him as a bad guy.

Despite whatever Tywin Lannister did, he is indeed one of the most memorable characters from the show, and he is remembered for his strong aura and personality.
