Uncut Gems 2: Adam Sandler’s Netflix Smash Hit Sequel Has a Disappointing Update After Safdie Brothers Breakup
Benny Safdie is not just a director, he is an actor and a screenwriter too. In an all-encompassing role, Safdie goes out on a limb with every project and gives his 100% similar to his hit movie Uncut Gems. In the midst of the recent rumors of his split with his brother Josh Safdie, it seems like the two brothers are on their own and charting their own path in the industry. However, this comes as a piece of bad news for fans who were eagerly anticipating the release of the sequel of Uncut Gems.
Who Will Make Uncut Gems 2?
Starring Adam Sandler and directed by the Safdie brothers, Uncut Gems is a crime thriller movie about a jeweler who scrambles to find a way to pay off his debts. In the spur of the moment, he makes a bet that can either set him up for life or ruin everything that he has left. From sound design and set to the actors and overwhelming emotions, the movie has it all. This is why Uncut Gems became an instant hit with positive reviews across the board.
The recent rumors claimed that the Safdie brothers have now split and will not be making the sequel of their blockbuster movie. On one hand, the rumor suggested that the brothers have had a fight that forced them to go their separate ways, but Benny Safdie suggests otherwise. In an interview with Variety, he assures his fans that the split is amicable as the brothers have decided to explore their own way in the industry and see who they are outside of their collaboration.
“It’s a natural progression of what we each want to explore. I will direct on my own, and I will explore things that I want to explore. I want that freedom right now in my life.”
Furthermore, he expresses that he has not been involved in making the Uncut Gems sequel in contrast to what is being said in the media. Benny has not written the script with Josh and has not contributed to the movie in any way. As far as his knowledge of the project goes, he says the movie is “on pause.” The conversation segues into his future working with his brother, to which he replies that he is unsure of what the future holds for the Safdie brothers.

Benny Safdie’s Smashing Year 2023
The 37-year-old director and writer has had a smashing 2023 with two sky-soaring projects that he was a part of. Unlike his primary occupation, the year witnessed Safdie’s immense talent in acting. He was seen in two movies – Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret and Oppenheimer. Safdie played the titular character Margaret’s dad in the former movie. In it, he’s a Jewish man who married a Christian woman and set up their lives in the suburbs, raising their daughter in bliss.
On the other hand, Safdie bagged a role in the spectacular movie that raised the standards of cinema, Oppenheimer by Christopher Nolan. This job came as a surprise to Safdie who never expected Nolan to cast him in a movie, especially one as huge as Oppenheimer. In another life, Safdie would have been a physicist which was his first choice of career, when he left everything and studied film. Fatefully, he plays the role of a theoretical physicist in the movie named Edward Teller.
“You’d come into the room and Chris would say, ‘All right, let’s go.’ No camera. Everybody’s in makeup, and we’d just do the scene. And then it was like, let’s figure out where the cameras go. It was pure openness. This is a huge movie, and he’s still operating with that level of freedom. As an actor, it made me feel awesome.”
This further inspired Safdie to work harder and research to perfect his role. His character in the movie has a Hungarian accent which he learned by listening to Teller’s speeches. Safdie has indeed had a wonderful year with his acting roles that expanded his resume. It will be exhilarating to see what he does now that he has gone solo.
