Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark Sequel Still Hauntingly Alive!
Director Andre Ovredal of the bone-chilling film Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark has just delivered an exhilarating update the highly-anticipated sequel is well and truly in progress! Brace yourselves for more haunting tales and hair-raising thrills, as the director assures fans that the horror journey is far from over.
“We have a story. We have a script. We’ve been working on the script as late as last year and even slightly into this year. The process obviously stopped with the strike — but it’s alive, for sure. COVID and then [The Last Voyage of the Demeter] eating up two years of my life certainly put a dent in the progress”, Ovredal said.
During his promotion of the upcoming Dracula adaptation, The Last Voyage of the Demeter, Ovredal revealed the current status of Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark 2. He explained that COVID-19 disruptions and his involvement in The Last Voyage of the Demeter contributed to the delays. Despite that, the team managed to develop a story and script for the sequel. However, the ongoing WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes have temporarily paused the writing process in Hollywood, including work on the sequel’s script.

Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark was well-directed and visually impressive, boasting creature effects that genuinely unsettled audiences, as expected from director Andre Ovredal and producer Guillermo del Toro. However, the script couldn’t fully explore all the introduced concepts, leading to some sequences without any monsters that felt dragged out in comparison.
Director Ovredal later proved himself a skilled filmmaker with Scary Stories, collaborating with Del Toro to craft a seamless blend of horror that felt both unique and cohesive in its style. When the film delved into the terrifying stories, it truly shone. Each sequence featuring a monster pursuing one of the teens was masterfully filmed with a distinct style of horror in mind. For instance, the suspense slowly built up in the case of the Toe Monster, while frantic terror engulfed the scenes involving the Smiling Lady.
