Unlike Her The Idol Character Johnny Depp’s Daughter Lily-Rose Depp Had No Stardom Pressure
In 2014, French-American actress Lily-Rose Depp embarked on the journey to establish herself as an actress in Hollywood, following in the footsteps of her superstar American dad Johnny Depp, and her French model cum actress mother Vanessa Paradis. At the mere age of 16, Lily-Rose Depp became the ambassador of the French fashion brand Chanel, and since then, she has promoted the brand in several famous fashion magazines.
For her performance as Isadora Duncan in the 2016 movie The Dancer, Lily-Rose Depp was nominated as the Most Promising Actress at the 42nd César Awards and the 22nd Lumières Awards. Besides making cameos, she has also starred in some short films. Her most recent venture was the HBO series The Idol. However, the actress once said that her childhood did not resemble that of her character Jocelyn in the series.
Lily-Rose Depp’s Experiences Do Not Resemble Jocelyn’s
The drama TV series The Idol was created by Canadian singer Abel Tesfaye, most commonly known as The Weeknd, Sam Levinson, and Reza Fahim. The series follows the life of a pop idol Jocelyn and her complicated relationship with a night-club owner Tedros (portrayed by Tesfaye).
In the series, Jocelyn is one of the most famous pop stars in the world. Following her mother’s death which leads to a serious nervous breakdown, Jocelyn struggles to make a comeback. Lily-Rose Depp insisted that while growing up, her life was nothing like Jocelyn’s.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Depp said:
“The backstory that we thought about a lot for Jocelyn is that she’s somebody who’s been working basically since she could talk. She was a child actress, she had a mother who was really pushy in that way and really kind of bred her to be this trained performer, and that was her upbringing. That was certainly not mine.”
Despite being born to two of the most famous people in show business, it is nothing short of a miracle that the The King actress had a childhood that was mostly like any other kid.
Lily-Rose Depp Likes Her Character In The Idol
The Idol seemed to deviate quite a few degrees from the message that it aimed to convey. Upon its premiere at the Cannes Film Festival, it was criticized for its graphic s-xual content, poor script, and direction. Even Tesfaye and Depp’s performance was highly criticized. Consequently, the series was canceled by HBO after just one season.

Despite all of this, Lily-Rose Depp told Entertainment Weekly that she liked exploring the unrelatable side of her character Jocelyn. She said:
“[I love] the self-awareness that she has, that she is not like everybody else, even though she’s flesh and bone just like everybody else, her life does not resemble a lot of people’s lives, and she is in a very particular position. The fact that she doesn’t shy away from that says a lot about who she is as a person.”
The actress said that she believed that people are living in a world where everyone is trying to be relatable in some sense in celebrity culture but Jocelyn did not make any attempts to be relatable.
