‘Venom: The Last Dance’ Starring Actor Who Portrayed Andrew Garfield’s Sworn Nemesis in ‘The Amazing Spider-Man’ Raises Serious Questions About its Timeline
The first trailer for Venom: The Last Dance is out and eagle-eyed fans have already started spotting the little details that are raising some rather important questions. The trailer suggests that this film might be the last time the audience will get to see Tom Hardy as the struggling reporter-turned-superhero Eddie Brock.
Set in Sony’s Spider-Man Universe (SSU), the new Venom movie is going to see the introduction of multiple new characters. One such character is the one Rhys Ifans plays in this movie. Ifans has previously played a villain in the SSU, which is making fans question the timeline in which the movie is set.
Rhys Ifans’ Showing up in Venom: The Last Dance Trailer is Making Fans Question the Film’s Timeline
Venom 3 picks up the story shortly after Tom Hardy‘s Eddie Brock and his friend Venom’s brief visit to the Marvel Cinematic Universe in the post-credits scene of Spider-Man: No Way Home. This upcoming film will see the vigilante and his symbiote companion on the run from federal agents and aliens from Venom’s planet.
Repeat casting is not something that Marvel is a stranger to. The multiverse has allowed the franchise to recast actors who have played a character in one project to appear as a completely different character in another project. For instance, Gemma Chan had the role of Minn-Erva, a Kree member of Starforce, in Captain Marvel before she got to star as Sersi in Eternals.
Rhys Ifans who has previously portrayed Dr. Curt Conners/Lizard in The Amazing Spider-Man has also appeared in The Last Dance. This has led to confusion among the fans regarding the film’s timeline. Here is what some of them had to say:
While there is no telling if Ifans’ character is Lizard or just an unrelated character, fans’ worries about the timeline of the movie seem understandable. If this is not Lizard, it might be just another stunt casting.
Rhys Ifans is Not the Only MCU Alum Who Has Appeared in Venom 3
Ifans’ Lizard also appeared in Spider-Man: No Way Home even though it was through CGI and a voice-over from the actor himself. According to Inverse, in the few moments for which he did return to his human form Marvel had repurposed shots from The Amazing Spider-Man.
That said, The House of the Dragons star is not the only actor who has shown up in the upcoming film. Chiwetel Ejiofor, who appeared as the villain Baron Mordo in Doctor Strange, is also seen in a mystery role in the trailer.
Until any official announcements are made, all viewers can do is wait to find out if Ejiofor is another variant of Mordo who has switched from hunting Sorcerer Supreme to aliens or a completely new character.
Venom: The Last Dance is scheduled to be released on October 25th, 2024.
