DC is currently in a period of transition. With James Gunn and Peter Safran as the new CEOs and a complete reboot of the former DCEU on its way, fans are excited for what’s to come. However, with the transition and projects releasing as is, things are not running smoothly for DC at Warner Bros.

After getting bashed for canceling the highly anticipated, Leslie Grace starrer Batgirl over a year ago, Warner Bros. still seems to be promoting the movie alongside the teenage superhero movie Blue Beetle. It has fans confused and enraged, to say the least.

Blue Beetle Marketing Hinting at the Cancelled Batgirl Return?

Prior to the much anticipated Blue Beetle release, the marketing for the film has begun. In comic book stores, can be found cardboard cutouts and standees of Xolo Maridueña as Blue Beetle. A fan posted a picture standing next to the standee on the X app (@Croc_Block) and the vulture-eyed fans saw some error in the promotional tool.

On a closer look, the bottom of the standee has the DC logo surrounded by the upcoming movies as it reads “Check out all of the DC films coming soon!”. And on the bottom in the middle can be seen the Batgirl movie logo sending fans into a frenzy.

The movie release was canceled in August 2021, due to the reason that “it simply did not work” for David Zaslav, DC CEO at the time. Now the logo ending up on a promotional standee for the latest DC release, reeks of neglectful behavior. The fan reactions say it all:

Another fan said:

These are a few of the angry fans in social media spaces. There are many who have said less or more. It will be interesting to see if this marketing error is rectified any time soon and/or if some explanation is offered for the same.

The decision of cancelling Batgirl came when the film was in the post-production stages. It was said to be the company’s cost-cutting move. But several other speculations were made at the time. It caused mass disappointment among fans and became one of the most expensive films to be canceled with a budget of around $90 million.

DC has been in a rough state for quite some time now. Post-cancellation of the Leslie Grace starrer, there have been some issues around the movie including scene clips and pictures being leaked online. This marketing error comes at a time when DC has had a flop streak with its latest projects The Flash, Black Adam, and Shazam 2. As box-office prospects for Blue Beetle are not high as it is, it remains to be seen how such errors sit with an already agitated audience.

Blue Beetle will be in theaters on Friday, August 18.
