Was Whoopi Goldberg’s ‘The View’ Canceled after Relentless Attacks from Writers Strike?
Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One, Barbie, and Oppenheimer have enjoyed great success at the box office in recent months, making it easier for many to forget Hollywood is effectively at a standstill.
The movies that are shattering records and earning astronomical figures in theaters might be making noise now, but there’s a good chance the majority of their development was done way before May 2. The date is relevant because, from the start of May, the Writers Guild of America (WGA) has been on strike as it seeks fairer compensation for writers. From July 14, the SAG-AFTRA strike also started, demanding better working conditions for actors.
Naturally, these strikes are going to slow down the majority of Hollywood projects. However, the situation has also become a breeding ground for misinformation, as purported insiders queue up to break news about how these strikes are impacting different shows and movies in different ways.

Misleading Claim Made Regarding Whoopi Goldberg’s The View?
The daytime talk show, The View, is one of the longest-running shows on American television, as the audience continues to consume feel-good insights from the likes of Whoopi Goldberg, Sara Haines, and Ana Navarro, among other co-hosts.
However, a report from the YouTube channel Just In suggested the popular show is getting canceled. The title of their video read: “Whoopi Goldberg PANICS As ‘The View’ Gets CANCELLED After NEW Backlash.”
Further, just over a minute into the video, the ongoing Writers Guild of America strike was blamed for the cancellation of the show.
The video, which has amassed close to half a million views, had a description that read:
“The Writers Guild strike sent shockwaves through the entertainment industry, and even the indomitable “View” was not spared. The fallout from this strike affected the show’s quality, as the witty banter and thought-provoking discussions we’ve come to expect started to dwindle. The hosts, who are used to dishing out the latest buzz with their signature flair, were forced to steer clear of any topics remotely connected to the Writers Guild, leaving them with a limited pool of material to work with. As ratings began to dip and loyal viewers grew restless with the show’s new direction, sparks flew on the set.”
However, forget the reason behind the cancellation, as things stand, there isn’t even any formal update on the future of The View. As far as we understand, the YouTube video didn’t substantiate their claims with any source, raising further warning flags.
Moreover, as per The Wrap, the show, which was created by veteran journalist Barbara Walters before the turn of the century, was on a break.

Whoopi Goldberg Defends Barbie
One of the reasons behind The View’s popularity is Goldberg’s brilliant handling of her role as the moderator of the show. Her witty and sharp riposte has ensured she remains well-liked by the audience even after a stint that has stretched for well over a decade.
That same vibe was on the show when she jumped to the defense of Barbie amid outrage from popular conservative figures due to the movie’s attempt at taking a dig at patriarchy.
Late in July, Goldberg responded in style (via Variety):
“It’s a movie! It’s a movie about a doll! I thought y’all would be happy. [Barbie] has no genitalia, so there’s no s*x involved. Ken has no genitalia, so he can’t — it’s a doll movie! And the kids know it’s colorful and it’s Barbie. You guys, I want y’all to tell your daughters why you’re not taking them to the ‘Barbie’ movie.”
Judging by the popularity of Barbie, it’s fair to say a sizable amount of moviegoers enjoyed Greta Gerwig‘s work. The director of the movie also recently showed her support to the writers amid the WGA strike, insisting nothing in Barbie happened without Noah Baumbach (co-writer) and nothing in Hollywood happens without writers.
