Dwayne Johnson is one of the most prominent celebrities in the world. In fact, he is regarded as one of the greatest professional wrestlers of all time and played a great role in the development and success of the World Wrestling Federation.

Dwayne Johnson initially tried to establish himself as a footballer but soon realized that his true calling was wrestling, a sport his father had championed. Dwayne Johnson has wrestling in his veins if his family’s history with the sport is anything to go by. Not only was his father Rocky Johnson a wrestling champion but his maternal grandfather Peter Maivia was also a professional wrestler. Not to mention that his maternal grandmother was one of the very first female pro-wrestling promoters and managed Polynesian Pacific Pro Wrestling for six years in the 1980s, following her husband’s demise.

Johnson’s father Rocky Johnson was one of the greatest wrestlers of his generation. Having started his professional wrestling career in 1964, he became a top contender in the National Wrestling Alliance in the 1970s and had several matches against then-world champions. In 1982, he and his tag partner Tony Atlas became the first Black men to have won the WWF championship.

By this time, Dwayne Johnson was already ten years old and would often go to wrestling matches to watch his father. Here is a video of him sitting in the audience to watch his father wrestle.

Behind all the glitz and glamour of show business, celebrities are people too, and much like anyone else in the world, their personal lives are also complex at times. Dwayne Johnson too once admitted how his relationship with his father was not all sunshine and rainbows.

While talking to ET‘s Kevin Frazier in 2022, he said:

“I was an only child and I had a complicated relationship with my dad, though he was my hero when I was a little boy. […] But some of the things and the lessons that I learned from my old man I didn’t realize how critical those lessons were until years later. And, to be honest with you, I didn’t realize how important they were until he passed away.”

Dwayne Johnson went on to say how he would have given anything to say goodbye to his father properly, something he did not get a chance to do. Even so, the actor felt closer to him than ever before, after his death.
